Wednesday in the Octave of Easter
After totally missing the fact that their conversation with a stranger was really with the risen Christ, the two disciples, probably embarrassed, said, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” Lk_24:13-35
Ever have that conversation, beloved, with someone you don’t really know very well, explaining all you do know about a particular topic, only to find out that they are a world renowned expert in the field. And you probably got it all wrong anyway.
And we’re asked to preach the Gospel!!! If that isn’t scary. But I don’t think Jesus was looking for Scripture Scholars. Jesus was more likely looking for people who were excited enough to share their experiences of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit in their everyday lives. It’s not the content, but the excitement! But we do have to make sure that we’ve got it right too. Maybe bounce it off a friend first. Maybe read a little about what others (reputable others) have found.
In a world where we don’t know who to trust anymore, and especially not the media, let’s make sure our faith proclamations are at least founded on the Scriptures and not what we heard on the news. The Holy Spirit will help guide us, if we simply ask!
