Elijah’s Whisper – My Whisper

Bubbles2 Then the LORD said (to Elijah), “Go outside and stand on the mountain before the LORD; the LORD will be passing by.”  A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the LORD – but the LORD was not in the wind.  After the wind there was an earthquake – but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was fire – but the LORD was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound.  When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave. A voice said to him, “Elijah, why are you here?” 1 Kings 19:11-13

Why are YOU here, beloved?

Was it to discover magnificent colors? Was it to find colorful music or awesome videos? Was it just curiosity? Was it accidental? Were you really looking for God, for Hope, for true LOVE somewhere in this menagerie we call the web?

silenceOr were you just hiding in a cave, waiting on the Lord to Whisper in your ear – a Word – LIFE! Life, it’s in You! And YOU are beautiful in the Eyes of God, no matter what the world may say or think.

You are Loved!!

Every day the Lord whispers in our ears – Words of HOPE, Words of LOVE, and maybe not even words – just His JOY in our hearts.

Let’s follow the Scriptures of our daily Mass and see if we can catch those Words – simple but beautiful – Whispers to the Wind . . .

11-30-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 30, 2023
(St. Andrew, Apostle)
The Scripture says, “No one who believes in him will be put to shame.” There is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all, enriching all who call upon him. “For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” But how can they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach? And how can people preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring the good news!”  Rom_10:9-18

How beautiful the feet!

11-29-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 29, 2023
The Babylonian King, Belshazzar was abusing the sacred vessels from the Temple of the Lord and worshiping idols, when a hand suddenly appeared, writing a message on the wall. Daniel responded, “The God in whose hand is your life breath and the whole course of your life, you did not glorify. By him were the wrist and hand sent, and the writing set down. This is the writing that was inscribed: MENE, TEKEL, and PERES. These words mean: MENE, God has numbered your kingdom and put an end to it; TEKEL, you have been weighed on the scales and found wanting; PERES, your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and Persians.”  Dn_5:1-6,13-14,16-17,23-28

Sometimes, beloved, God’s writing is right there in front of us.  Are we wanting? Have we forgotten to glorify God for every little aspect of our lives, even our very breath?  Will our kingdom be divided among the colleagues, the competitors?  It’s a good reminder for us, beloved, to never forget our God!  And always keep our eye open for the “writing on the wall.”

11-28-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 28, 2023
His disciples asked Jesus when the “end time” will come.  Jesus responded, “See that you not be deceived, for many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ and ‘The time has come.’ Do not follow them! When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for such things must happen first, but it will not immediately be the end.”  Lk_21:5-11

Well, beloved, we’ve got the wars and we’ve got the natural disasters, floods, earthquakes, hurricanes and a really messed up everyone else.  But it’s still not the end yet.  Jesus says, don’t worry about it, just be the very best, loving people you can be.  And all that will pass, along with us as well.  Pray for a minimally pain bearing death.  And if it is painful, place it all in God’s hands, unite it with the pain that Jesus had to suffer, all with the promised hope of much much better yet to come.  And we’ll see you all on the other side!  Thank you Jesus!

11-27-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 27, 2023
Jesus noticed a poor widow putting in two small coins. He said, “I tell you truly, this poor widow put in more than all the rest; for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood.”  Lk_21:1-4

In a world where everywhere we turn there’s someone else wanting.  Some true to their need.  Some wanting to steal from the naive.  And everywhere we turn there’s another scam.  Sometimes it’s hard to tell the truly needy from the thief.  And so we need to pray about it.  We need to ask our Jesus to help us discern.  And instead of being overly protective of our possessions, our hard-earned resources, or seemingly greedy to a world just aching to judge us, we give to those we’ve proven are worthy of our giving and we give then without restraint!  Just as Jesus would.  Just as the woman in Luke’s Gospel account did to her Church!

11-26-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 26, 2023
(Solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe)
Thus says the Lord, “As a shepherd tends his flock when he finds himself among his scattered sheep, so will I tend my sheep. I will rescue them from every place where they were scattered when it was cloudy and dark. I myself will pasture my sheep; I myself will give them rest, says the Lord GOD. The lost I will seek out, the strayed I will bring back, the injured I will bind up, the sick I will heal, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy, shepherding them rightly.”  Ez_34:11-12,15-17

And so shall we, beloved.  We are called to shepherd all the lost and broken, the hungry and cold, the poor and the homeless.  Where, we may ask?  Wherever there are jobs to be lost, persecutions inflicted, greed and selfishness, pride and haughtiness.  There we will find the quiet, the lonely, the downtrodden.  Jesus teaches us the necessity for our love of neighbor.  And if not us, then who?  And if not now, then when?  Love, binds all wounds, heals all hurts and brings us all to that Kingdom that Jesus promised!  For the sake of His love, love – ALL!

and one for YOU!

11-25-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 25, 2023
(St. Catherine of Alexandria, Virgin and Martyr)
Jesus said to the disbelieving Pharisees who were questioning the resurrection of the dead, “The children of this age marry and remarry; but those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age and to the resurrection of the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. They can no longer die, for they are like angels; and they are the children of God because they are the ones who will rise.” Lk_20:27-40

It’s not really about marriage and lawsuits, or money and riches, or position and glory.  The Kingdom of Heaven is about total devotion to God.  It’s about recognizing that our relationship with God trumps every other relationship or possession we deem we own.  It’s about relinquishing them all save for God.  And resurrection is about Faith.  Jesus, who IS God tells us there will be a resurrection, and THAT’s all we need to know about it!  It is a given.  It is God’s TRUTH!

11-24-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 24, 2023
(St. Andrew Dung-Lac, Priest, and Companions, Martyrs)
Jesus entered the temple area and proceeded to drive out those who were selling things, saying to them, “It is written, My house shall be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves.”  Lk_19:45-48

In a world of thieves and robbers, of angels and saints, what are we willing to endure for the sake of Christ, beloved?  And what side are we on?  Just because we wear a collar or don a cross on our vehicle, we can still hurt those who DO truly believe, those who are willing to die for their faith.  Where are our heart strings attached?  Are they linked to a mask, an image, a false, self-centered vision of who our Lord really is?  Or are they linked to the true God?  The God who wants to dwell in all of us, not just the privileged.  Is my house one of prayer or is it filled with thieves?  Seek and you will find. Ask and Jesus will let you know in no uncertain terms.  And then pray, Jesus, help us to be more like you with every dying breath.  To love as you loved.  To give as you gave and continue to give with your boundless grace!

11-23-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 23, 2023
(Thanksgiving Day)
Jesus said, “Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?” Then he said to him, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.”  Lk_17:11-19

Sometimes it takes a knock on the side of the head, a foreignness, a miracle to open us to recognize all the gifts we have to be thankful for, beloved.  Close your eyes and SEE.  God’s grace is among us.  God’s glorious grace!!!  And we give THANKS!

11-22-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 22, 2023
(St. Cecilia, Virgin and Martyr)
Jesus said, ‘I tell you, to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.’  Lk_19:11-28

So, beloved, we must be careful that don’t squander what we’ve got – what we’ve been given by God, be it material possessions, supernatural gifts, natural gifts, food, jobs, loved ones, whatever!  For God loves a cheerful giver!  And those who take care of those and what we’ve been given.  Give in Thanks that we have to give!

11-21-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 21, 2023
(Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary)
Jesus said, “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost.”  Lk_19:1-10

Jesus is looking for us, beloved.  Are we seeking to be found by Him?  He wants to save us!

11-20-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 20, 2023
A blind man called out to Jesus saying, “Son of David, have pity on me!” Then Jesus stopped and ordered that he be brought to him; and when he came near, Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” He replied, “Lord, please let me see.” Jesus told him, “Have sight; your faith has saved you.” He immediately received his sight and followed him, giving glory to God.”  Lk_18:35-43

. . . The test of Faith!  Do we have faith enough, beloved, to ask the impossible and to actually be ready to receive it?  Jesus says, ASK!

11-19-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 19, 2023
(33rd Sunday, Ordinary Time, A)
Jesus told a parable about a master and his servants.  After entrusting his servants with allocations of funding that met with their abilities, the master returned seeking an accounting of their activities with the funding.  The servant who had received the one talent came forward and said, ‘Master, I knew you were a demanding person, harvesting where you did not plant and gathering where you did not scatter; so out of fear I went off and buried your talent in the ground. Here it is back.’ His master said to him in reply, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! . . .  Now then! Take the talent from him and give it to the one with ten. For to everyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And throw this useless servant into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.’”  Mt_25:14-30

If there’s one thing that we, as humans, are not real fond of, it’s being judged. Is he cute, or is he ugly? Is she smart, or maybe just simple? White or black, home-grown or alien, Catholic, or the rest of the world, judgmental or accepting? There’s always someone judging us. And 50% of the time we’re acceptable, and 50% of the time we’re in the dog house.

And it’s funny, because it’s the same thing with God. 50% of the time we’re putting Him in the dog house and 50% of the time He’s our “knight in shining armor.”

But, you know what, God does not need to judge us, because He knows that we do a good enough job of that, all by ourselves. And what the Scriptures, the Church and Jesus are trying to teach us, is that, THAT’s OK! It’s OK to evaluate our own thoughts and actions – all the time.

Are they worthy of what we think God wants of us? Or do they always seem to fall short of the mark? Have we made that mark too high, even for our own good? Or do we allow ourselves a step-wise growth?  You see, it’s not about beating ourselves up over our failures, but growing from them.

Maybe, we’re just not the 5-Talent kind of guy or gal. But maybe, with just our 1-Talent, we can even surpass Him! It’s all in our attitude!

Today’s Scriptures, beyond their depth and their wisdom, continue to show us the pathway to God’s Kingdom. Not necessarily, or only, a pathway of self-judgment, but a pathway of sacrifice AND reward. A pathway of risk and also readiness for any possible failure or attack. A pathway of loving care for our spouses, both husbands AND wives, and for the poor and needy, as well.

Of course, then there IS that 1-Talent man (or woman). And THERE’S the Challenge in today’s Scriptures, because we can read his role in many different ways!

Coming from the “Worker’s” and not the Manager’s viewpoint. And knowing what the 1-Talent servant said about his Master,  I may have, just as well, kept that money stashed in a hole myself. As opposed to taking the risk of losing it, and possibly my job as well.

But I also thought that the guy was a little ‘short one coin, or one marble’ in sharing that opinion with his boss. And when you think about it, that was probably, exactly why he only got ONE coin.

You see, the Master already knew who would succeed and who would fail, when the chips were distributed in the first place. And maybe this was simply a last chance opportunity for the 1-Talent guy, to prove himself, or else, get himself fired. Maybe it was really more than JUST playing it safe, with this guy, because his master didn’t respond with a “Good job Joe.  I’m glad you didn’t lose that ONE Talent you had.” Instead, he called the guy “a wicked and lazy servant.”

Our Scripture Scholars infer from that statement, that the guy had, not only a problem with insecurity and fear, but he had a problem with envy and spite as well. He really had no idea why he only got ONE Talent, while his colleague got FIVE. And so, to spite his unfair boss, he REFUSED to trade, so that his master might not benefit from his faithful Stewardship.

Instead of getting, even the less risky banking interest on the coin, he made sure that his boss would lose out on the deal with him. And in the end, he assured, he guaranteed his own demise! They call it cutting your nose off to spite your face.

And that’s EXACTLY where: Jealousy, Spite, Revenge and Judgment gets us!

So then, where does that leave us? Well, yes, we might relate to the poor, downtrodden 1-T employee. But maybe, IF that’s the case, we need to reevaluate our own service from the eyes of the Employer! Maybe we can find some creative way to Out-Perform, even that 5-Talent guy, with our little 1-Talent allocation.

Maybe the “Judgment” needs to be on ourselves, instead of on our God, or our neighbor, or our co-workers, or our brothers and sisters.

And, of course, the next logical question is: where does all this fit into our Church? Well, gee, we just happen to be talking about Stewardship! And Stewardship, as we all know, means a little more than just our 10% monetary Talents, our TITHE. Stewardship means sharing some of our God-given Abilities, our Physical, Mental and Spiritual TALENTS:

Be it Greeting people, or Bringing up the Gifts at Mass, Be it singing in one of our Choirs, Computer work, or even just sharing our thoughts in a quiet little Bible Study Group, there’s almost an unlimited amount of “talent” we can share. And there are GADS of ways we can help build God’s Kingdom, right here in our own Church.

Think Church is a bit of a mess? . . . Come help Clean or Fix, or even Share your ideas and your muscles We’re all on this Journey together. And it’s only as good as WE make it!

Sure, there are Crosses to carry, Roadblocks to dodge, Hurdles to jump and Sacrifices to make. But, you know what, if there weren’t, how exciting would our own stories be?

All we have to remember is that God is with us, NO Matter What! No judgment, just Love and Encouragement. And with our focus on HIM, there is no place to GO, but GROW. So, let’s GROW together!

God is just waiting to see the marvels we can do, with His Grace, and for His Kingdom!

11-18-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 18, 2023
(St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, Virgin)
Jesus told his disciples a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary.  Lk_18:1-8

Persevere in prayer, beloved.  Don’t give up if you think the Lord’s response is too slow.  He’s not only teaching us perseverance, but patience as well.  The Lord will answer in His time and in His way.  But never lose faith in God.  His love is boundless.  Trust in Him.

11-17-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 17, 2023
(St. Elizabeth of Hungary, Religious)
Jesus said to his disciples: “As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be in the days of the Son of Man; they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage up to the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. Similarly, as it was in the days of Lot: they were eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, building; on the day when Lot left Sodom, fire and brimstone rained from the sky to destroy them all.”  Lk_17:26-37

Today’s Scriptures remind us of the importance of knowing where our priorities lie, what the true center of our lives really is, and why all of that is so important.

In teaching His disciples and His Jewish listeners, Jesus often referred back to stories from the Old Testament Scriptures, stories that the Jews were well familiar with. He speaks of Jonah’s rebellious flight to the sea, against God’s call, and the same sea that swallowed him alive. He speaks of how the repentant faith of the Ninevites saved them, by God’s awesome mercy and love, even, despite their sinful past. He speaks of Noah’s faithful obedience to God, in building an Ark in the middle of the desert, and Noah’s salvation through it. And He speaks of the oblivious sinfulness and subsequent destruction of the rest of the unbelieving world.

And we learn from them, how easy it is to ignore the Signs of God’s warnings to repent and be saved. Today Jesus speaks of the people of Sodom’s hopeless fire for immoral passion, and their literal burning in the fire of God’s wrath. And then, He speaks of the remorse of Lot’s wife for the loss of her home, her possessions, and her past, instead of having a faithful trust in the salvation and the future that God has already offered to her . . . Because, by her prioritizing of the material world over the Eternal, Lot’s wife, herself, became a Monument of material, made of Salt.

You see, over and over again, Jesus reminds and advises His followers to always prioritize – the Creator over the created, even as far as best friends and family. Not that Community is unimportant. But, all the way back, from the Old Testament times to the teachings of Jesus, it was always – Love God as #1, and #2 was Love our neighbor. And nowhere in there, was there anything about loving our car, or loving our house, or loving our football team, or even, loving the beauty of God’s natural, created, world – as being the actual presence of God . . . We call that, the heresy of Pantheism. Because what it really is, is Idol Worship, as the Wisdom Writer warns his readers. Yes, the beauty of nature can remind us of God’s all-powerful and creative love for us. But God is not the ant, nor the flower, nor the wind, Himself.

When we prioritize God over all other material, and even spiritual “distractions” in life, then what we’ll will find is that God will take care of all that other stuff in turn. And He promises us that we will receive exactly what we prioritize in life: sea for sea, fire for fire, death for death, BUT – In God, in Jesus, we’ll receive all the Joy, and the Salvation, and our Union with Him – forever.

And that’s a Reason to live for!

11-16-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 16, 2023
(St. Gertrude, Virgin, and St. Margaret of Scotland)
Jesus said, “The coming of the Kingdom of God cannot be observed, and no one will announce, ‘Look, here it is,’ or, ‘There it is.’ For behold, the Kingdom of God is among you.” Lk_17:20-25

But, you can feel that Kingdom in the smile of a child, in the revelation of God’s truth in a youth, in the joy of reunion of adults, in the love and unity of a family, in the praises of the faithful.  The Kingdom of God is among us, and His name is Jesus!

11-15-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 15, 2023
(St. Albert the Great, Bishop and Doctor of the Church)
Jesus was approached by ten lepers, and asked for a healing.  As they were going they were cleansed. And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. He was a Samaritan.  Lk_17:11-19

Jesus said that a prophet is not without recognition except in his own native town.  The Jews, in all their knowledge of the Scriptures, had the hardest time recognizing Jesus as their Messiah.  Fulfilling all the signs, speaking the words, healing the unhealable, they were blinded from the Truth of Jesus.  But place in the picture the Samaritans, the Greeks, the Magi, the outsiders and even the demons, and Jesus was clearly who He said He was to them – no questions asked!  We may not be Scripture Scholars, beloved, but with the little we do know about the Jewish prophesies and works and words of Jesus, I think it’s pretty clear to us as well.  Jesus IS the Son of God, the Savior of the world.  All we need do is let the rest of the world know – they ARE loved by God too!  And then, and always, give THANKS to God!

11-14-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 14, 2023
Jesus said to the Apostles: “Who among you would say to your servant who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Come here immediately and take your place at table’? Would he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat. Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink. You may eat and drink when I am finished’? Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded? So should it be with you. When you have done all you have been commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.’”  Lk_17:7-10

We are obliged, beloved, to love one another.  Not to expect love in return.  Not to only love when we are loved.  Not to feel that Love is our due for all we have given of ourselves.  When we have done all we have been commanded to do – to Love one another, only then do we truly recognize how much more there is yet to do by us.  Love!

11-13-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 13, 2023
(St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, Virgin)
Jesus said to his disciples, “Things that cause sin will inevitably occur, but woe to the one through whom they occur.” Lk_17:1-6

. . .  and we pray, constantly, Lord Jesus, that the cause of sin in others is not through us. Even though we may be persecuted because of righteousness, let not this righteousness, nor our occasional sinfulness be the cause of sinfulness in others.  Help us Lord, to be Your light and not the cause of darkness in others.  Open theirs and our eyes to see your light always!

11-12-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 12, 2023
(32nd Sunday Ordinary Time, A)
Jesus told his disciples this parable: “The kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones, when taking their lamps, brought no oil with them, but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps.”   Mt_25:1-13

Wise or foolish?  Fill the gas tank before the trip, or just hope there will be enough?  Pray, fast, read, study, indulge in the graces of God’s Sacraments?  Give to the needy, share God’s love, pray for others, love, even when it’s hard to?  Are our “oil lamps” filled?  Or do we just think we can say an Our Father before the sky falls in and the bright light blares above our heads?  Jesus warns us that if we do, it just might be too late, and the door will lock us out forever.

Maybe in life we’re the procrastination type.  Maybe we’ve just always been the last minute guy, the 5-minutes after Mass started type, the first to find the farthest seat in the back kind of person.  But maybe, on the other hand, we’ll find the entry to the “better part,” the gateway to eternity so backed up, we might just miss that train.  Yes, God loves us all more than we can ever imagine, but, Jesus tells us, He really does want a little motivation on our part as well.  As we approach the Season of Advent, it’s time once again to remember our need to be prepared.  And it’s all in the LOVE!

11-11-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 11, 2023
(St. Martin of Tours, Bishop)
Jesus said, No servant can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” And then He said to the Pharisees, “You justify yourselves in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts; for what is of human esteem is an abomination in the sight of God.” Lk_16:9-15

Who or what do we serve, beloved?  And to whom do we justify our actions and thoughts?  To ourselves, to our competitors, to our customers, to our bosses, or to our God!  Jesus tells us that God knows our most secret thoughts, words and actions.  Are they worthy of Him?  And Him alone!

11-10-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 10, 2023
(St. Leo the Great, Pope and Doctor of the Church)
St. Paul wrote, I myself am convinced about you, my brothers and sisters, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, and able to admonish one another.”  Rom_15:14-21

Now, it’s our turn to convince the rest of the world, not only about us (because we are the baptized), but about Jesus filling their lives with goodness and knowledge and love of Him, as well!

11-09-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 9, 2023
(Dedication of the Lateran Basilica)
In Ezekiel’s vision he saw, “Along both banks of the river, fruit trees of every kind shall grow; their leaves shall not fade, nor their fruit fail. Every month they shall bear fresh fruit, for they shall be watered by the flow from the sanctuary. Their fruit shall serve for food, and their leaves for medicine.”  Ez_47:1-2,8-9,12

The eternal river of life, flowing from the Temple, from God, from that precious, sacred heart of Jesus into our lives, feeding us and healing us and giving us the true life we so seek!  This is our Church!

11-08-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 8, 2023
St. Paul wrote, Brothers and sisters: Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.  Rom_13:8-10

Jesus said, “Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.”  Lk_14:25-33

Today’s Scriptures speak about loving one another, about letting go of material possessions’ hold over us, about not owing anything to anyone and about giving until it hurts.  Sometimes these goals can be quite a cross to bear, especially when we’re persecuted, when we’re dependent upon material objects for our jobs, jobs that feed us and keep us sane, and when we’re dependent upon others for those necessities of life.  Sometimes, just living can be a cross of its own.  Jesus calls us to pick it up anyway. To bear it with the confidence, that it all has His mark on it.  And that’s a mark of love and hope and salvation.  Trust in Jesus, beloved, and all might not seem all that well – but we know, that it WILL be!

11-07-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 7, 2023
Jesus said, “A man gave a great dinner to which he invited many. When the time for the dinner came, he dispatched his servant to say to those invited, ‘Come, everything is now ready.’ But one by one, they all began to excuse themselves. . . .” Mt_11:28

Well, unfortunately, not only did they miss the dinner, but they missed the train as well.  What about us, beloved?  Are we missing the minor things only to find out that in doing so we’re also missing the huge one, the best one, the only one that leads us to eternal reward?  Maybe it’s time to rethink what we’re excusing away!  It just might be the biggest slip of our lives!

11-06-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 6, 2023
Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways! ‘For who has known the mind of the Lord or who has been his counselor? Or who has given him anything that he may be repaid?’ For from him and through him and for him are all things. To God be glory forever. Amen.  Rom_11:29-36

Jesus said, “when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”  Lk_14:12-14

Our deeds, beloved, are to be performed out of our love for the needy and for our God and not for repayment in goods or esteem.  For God knows our every action, and our every thought. When our deeds are done out of selfish motives, most often, they may as well not even be done for the love in them is missing.  And very often it’s the love that is even more important than the deed itself.  Give LOVE.  And your greatest recompense just may be love in return!

11-05-23 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

November 5, 2023
(31st Sunday Ordinary Time, A)
Jesus reiterated, “The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”  Mt_23:1-12

So seek not the accolades of pride, the rewards of accomplishment nor even the remuneration of services rendered.  God will repay us!  But be humble in expectations and exaltation will come in its proper time, beloved.  Trust in Jesus!

(St. Charles Borromeo, Bishop)
Jesus said, “When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not recline at table in the place of honor. A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him, and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say, ‘Give your place to this man,’ and then you would proceed with embarrassment to take the lowest place. Rather, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place so that when the host comes to you he may say, ‘My friend, move up to a higher position.’ Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the table. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”  Lk_14:1,7-11

Notice how either way you wound up in the lowest place.  And yet, there’s quite a difference between selecting that place on your own accord, versus being sent there by others.  Pride and humility are two wolves barking at our doorway.  One can only lead to downfall, while the other can only lead to advancement.  Jesus reminds us that when we pump ourselves up with exaltation, there’s no more room for edification.  But when we humble ourselves, even the smallest glories of God are SPECTACULAR revelations!

(St. Martin de Porres, Religious)
St. Paul wrote, For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh. Rom_9:1-5

Jesus spoke to the scholars of the law and Pharisees in reply, asking, “Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath or not?” But they kept silent; so he took the man and, after he had healed him, dismissed him.  Lk_14:1-6

Yesterday, in our Church calendar and in our Mass celebrations we reminded ourselves of the immense value of our souls; the Value of Eternal life – on All Souls Day. On Wednesday, we specifically remembered those souls who achieved their eternal reward as Saints, on All Saints Day: our patrons, the martyrs, the consecrated, the pure, and even our parents and kids – for enduring us! And on Tuesday we were reminded of the evil and temptations that our own souls have to endure in this life, as we watched the sometimes, horrifying costumes that the kids and even grandkids had donned on All Hallows Eve, or Halloween.

Today, St. Paul reminds us again, that we DO have the Holy Spirit with and within us, to protect, to guide and to lead our souls back to our glorious homeland with God our Father, and Jesus our brother.

And yet, like St. Paul and Jesus, we too mourn for those lost souls among us – who prioritize selfishness and independence from God, and laws, and money, and immorality over their own Eternal Salvation.

Jesus and St. Paul show us how, neither death, nor unjust laws, nor any other human institution will ever keep them, nor, should it, us, from doing everything we possibly can – to save, to heal and to love our brothers and sisters who are so lost in this world that they risk the eternal loss of their souls as well.

You see, for us, we know that God IS Life, and that God is Love. And we know that Jesus saves, and heals, and loves all of us, to the extreme of giving His own life – for us.

And so, now, it’s our call, our responsibility, our duty to let Him be known – through our own words, and actions, and love – in a world so desperately in need of Him. And we thank God for the grace and for the blessing of that call!

(The Commemoration of the Faithful Departed, All Souls Day)
The souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them. They seemed, in the view of the foolish, to be dead; and their passing away was thought an affliction and their going forth from us, utter destruction. But they are in peace.  Wis_3:1-9

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. . . . Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil; for you are at my side with your rod and your staff that give me courage.  Ps_23

Jesus said, “this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day.”  Jn_6:37-40

This is the great hope of the Christian life!  Death is not an end to fear, a pit to fall into, a fire to dread, but it’s just a passage into a true life, an eternal life, a life of hope and glory and peace and communion with all of our believing brothers and sisters, and with our God!  Greater than the greatest experience we’ve ever had in this life is the life we have to look forward to, beloved.  O blessed death that lets me finally become One with my God and all those who went before me!  O blessed be our God forever!

(Solemnity of All Saints)
John had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation, race, people, and tongue. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb, wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation comes from our God, who is seated on the throne, and from the Lamb.” . . .  Then one of the elders spoke up and said to me, “Who are these wearing white robes, and where did they come from?” I said to him, “My lord, you are the one who knows.” He said to me, “These are the ones who have survived the time of great distress; they have washed their robes and made them white in the Blood of the Lamb.”  Rv_7:2-4,9-14

To the non-believer, the uninformed, this statement may seem like an atrocity, washing in blood!  And yet, we Christians, we Catholics know that the Angel and the Elder that John is speaking with is talking about the white robes of Baptism, cleansed by the Blood of Jesus that washes away our sins.  And no, it was not symbolic blood.  Jesus was truly murdered by a band of jealous, selfish Jewish leaders who, regardless of salvation, desired nothing more than earthly glory for themselves.  And thus they had the savior of the world crucified.  And it was through that blood that atones our sins, that reunion with our God is possible.  That blood washes away our sins and makes us white and pure like the robes of purity we wore in our baptism. And through it, we have been “Saved!”  And just as Jesus said to the sinners of His own time, He warns us to, “Go and sin no more!”
