Daily Mass Quotes – January 2021

Elijah’s Whisper – My Whisper

Bubbles2 Then the LORD said (to Elijah), “Go outside and stand on the mountain before the LORD; the LORD will be passing by.”  A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the LORD – but the LORD was not in the wind.  After the wind there was an earthquake – but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was fire – but the LORD was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound.  When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave. A voice said to him, “Elijah, why are you here?” 1 Kings 19:11-13

Why are YOU here, beloved?

Was it to discover magnificent colors? Was it to find colorful music or awesome videos? Was it just curiosity? Was it accidental? Were you really looking for God, for Hope, for true LOVE somewhere in this menagerie we call the web?

silenceOr were you just hiding in a cave, waiting on the Lord to Whisper in your ear – a Word – LIFE! Life, it’s in You! And YOU are beautiful in the Eyes of God, no matter what the world may say or think.

You are Loved!!

Every day the Lord whispers in our ears – Words of HOPE, Words of LOVE, and maybe not even words – just His JOY in our hearts.

Let’s follow the Scriptures of our daily Mass and see if we can catch those Words – simple but beautiful – Whispers to the Wind . . .

01-31-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 31, 2021
(4th Sunday Ordinary Time, B)
In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit; he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” Jesus rebuked him and said, “Quiet! Come out of him!” The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him.  Mk_1:21-28

Authority commands and subjects listen and obey.  Jesus had the authority to command healing, to command adherence to laws and to command freedom from oppression.  Those overwhelmed with evil spirits were freed by the command of Jesus for the spirits inhabiting them to depart.  He did not destroy those spirits, but displaced them.  In another place he speaks of spirits returning or entering others who are not defended.  Jesus is our defense, beloved.  And it’s up to us to stay in communication, in love, in obedience to Jesus in order to keep away those spirits seeking a new home.  We DON’T want that home to be us.  So be prepared!  Seek the Holy Spirit within and always pray for Jesus to protect us.  That, He will do.  Just as He’s promised!

01-30-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 30, 2021
In the midst of a storm, in a little boat, in the middle of the sea, with His disciples panicking in fear, Jesus rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Quiet! Be still!” The wind ceased and there was great calm.  Then he asked them, “Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?”  Mk_4:35-41

The writer of the Letter to the Hebrews tells us, Brothers and sisters: Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen.  Heb_11:1-2,8-19

Beloved, the Scriptures are telling us today not to place our hope, our faith in the things of the world.  Sure, we are called to support human dignity, to help those in need and to make sure our laws support life and do not destroy it.  But these are all temporal, worldly things.  Our hope is not of this world, but of the next.  For you see, terror and fear lead to death, but hope and love lead to life, life eternal.  This, Jesus came to bring to us!  Now all we need do is have Faith.  He will do what He promised.  Of this we can be sure!

01-29-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 29, 2021
Remember the days past when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a great contest of suffering.  At times you were publicly exposed to abuse and affliction; . . . do not throw away your confidence; it will have great recompense.  You need endurance to do the will of God and receive what he has promised.  Heb_10:32-39

The early Christians had to undergo great suffering which required patience and perseverance, faith and endurance.  Yet they persevered.  And many even died for their belief.  We have been very blessed indeed with our religious freedom.  Many nations do not enjoy that blessing and are and have been suffering already.  But our time may be coming soon, beloved.  Already within weeks of a new administration, everything that four years of embattlement against radical opposition have gained toward life and prosperity and security is disintegrating.  We should expect higher taxes, high gas prices again, a deterioration of our health coverage, a loss of morality, an increase in abortive deaths, along with persecution because of our faith.  But stand strong beloved!  God is with us.  Never let go of your Jesus and Jesus and the Holy Spirit will protect you.  And never forget, as St. Paul constantly reminds us, that our heavenly goal is so far beyond all this worldly minutia, that eventually none of it will have mattered or even be remembered.  Stay focused on Him!  And we will be united forever “on the other side!”   Peace and love!  And love and love…

01-28-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 28, 2021
(St. Thomas Aquinas, Priest and Doctor of the Church)
Jesus said to His disciples, “For there is nothing hidden except to be made visible; nothing is secret except to come to light. Anyone who has ears to hear ought to hear.”  Mk_4:21-25

It really makes you think, doesn’t it!  What am I doing that I don’t want anyone else to know?  What am I thinking that I’m glad they don’t know?  And what am I not doing that I really should be, or I’ve made enough excuses to not do, but I should be?  Nothing is hidden, beloved, as Jesus says. So be perfect, as your Heavenly Father is perfect.” Mt_5:48  And all will be well with you!

01-27-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 27, 2021
(St. Angela Merici, Virgin)
The Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying: ‘This is the covenant I will establish with them after those days, says the Lord: “I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them upon their minds,”’ he also says: ‘Their sins and their evildoing I will remember no more.’  Heb_10:11-18

God’s law is in our hearts and on our minds.  Conscience tells us the difference between good and evil.  And when we’re not sure, we can learn the subtle details through our Church.  Jesus forgives those sins we regret and repent of.  And that forgiveness is the most blessed and freeing feeling we can have, when are hearts desire His purity.

01-26-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 26, 2021
(Ss. Timothy and Titus, Bishops)
Jesus said, “For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.” Mk_3:31-35

God’s will, beloved, according to Jesus is love.  When we love we develop, form and grow relationships.  And those relationships are not always necessarily blood relationships, though, in reality, all relationships are blood relationships.  So whoever loves, which is following the will of God, is in relationship with Him, with Jesus, and with the Holy Spirit, besides all the rest of humanity.  These are my brothers and sisters and mother . . . the poor, the incarcerated, the elderly, the homeless, the unborn, the addict, the criminal, the lonely, the despised, the contradiction.  They’re all ours, in love!

01-25-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 25, 2021
(The Conversion of St. Paul, Apostle)
Saul was on his way to Damascus to catch more Christians for imprisonment. Telling his own story, he reflects, On that journey as I drew near to Damascus, about noon a great light from the sky suddenly shone around me. I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’ I replied, ‘Who are you, sir?’  And he said to me, ‘I am Jesus the Nazorean whom you are persecuting.’ Acts_22:3-16

What’s it like to hear the voice of Jesus speaking to us, beloved?  I think we all know.  It’s when we’re told to pray for that person who just cut us off instead of cursing them.  It’s when we fight with ourselves as to whether or not to give to that street beggar, or just look the other way.  It’s when we allow the customer in the store with only one item to go ahead of us with five.  It’s when we hold that door for the next person coming in, after we just passed through on our way out.  It’s when we compliment something that seems silly to us, but will truly make someone else’s day.

Jesus speaks to us in so many different ways throughout our day.  Are we listening?  Are we obeying?  Or are we stuck in our self-centered worlds, focused on a goal that WE’VE determined is important, when in reality, it doesn’t make a mole-hill of difference to anyone!

Maybe our first prayer of the day should be, “Help me Jesus to hear your voice today and to follow you!”  We just might be amazed at how we feel at the end of that day!

01-24-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 24, 2021
(3rd Sunday Ordinary Time, B)
As Jesus passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen.  Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Then they abandoned their nets and followed him. Mk_1:14-2

Catch a fish and feed a man.
Catch a man and feed a family.
Catch a family and feed the world!

And what’s the net that will catch so many beautiful children of God (whom we ALL are)?  It’s love!  Jesus taught us how to love.  We love by caring, by feeding, by healing and through the words He taught us – they’re miracles in the waiting.

Wanna stop abortion?  Stop messing with all the politics and start teaching, start being love to others.  For you see, that little blob of whatever you want to call him or her, is more than just tissue.  He’s more than just an inconvenience.  She just may be the one who saves your very life one day!  If you’ve had kids you know!  So blessed be the Lord of all who brings us salvation in so many and beautiful ways.  Blessed be God forever!

01-23-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 23, 2021
(St. Marianne Cope, O.S.F, Religious)
(St. Vincent of Saragossa, Deacon and Martyr)
For if the blood of goats and bulls and the sprinkling of a heifer’s ashes can sanctify those who are defiled so that their flesh is cleansed, how much more will the Blood of Christ, who through the eternal spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works to worship the living God. Heb_9:2-3,11-14

Sanctified, through the Holy Spirit living within us, by the offering of the only begotten Son of God, Jesus!  He is our hope and our salvation!  Trust in Him, beloved – in LOVE!

01-22-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 22, 2021
(Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children)
The LORD called me from birth, from my mother’s womb he gave me my name. Is_49:1-6

ALL life is precious in the eyes of the Lord!

Today we commemorate that sad day 48-years ago when the court system in the U.S. opened our country to the horrors of legal abortion.  Since 1973 it is estimated that we have lost over 60-MILLION innocent and helpless lives due to this decision.  And today, as a country, we suffer an enormous setback with our president and media further supporting this atrocity.  Stand up beloved for the lives of those unborn.  Stand up for an improvement in the morality of our country.  And stand up for the conversion of the twisted minds that think that this has anything to do with freedom.  It doesn’t!!  And more than ever, PRAY!

Jesus save us!

01-21-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 21, 2021
(St. Agnes, Virgin and Martyr)
Jesus is always able to save those who approach God through him,
since he lives forever to make intercession for them. Heb_7:25—8:6

01-20-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 20, 2021
(St. Sebastian, Martyr; St. Fabian, Pope and Martyr)
‘Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of God Most High,
met Abraham as he returned from his defeat of the kings

and blessed him.’  And Abraham apportioned to him a tenth of everything. His name first means righteous king, and he was also “king of Salem,” that is, king of peace.  Without father, mother, or ancestry, without beginning of days or end of life, thus made to resemble the Son of God, he remains a priest forever. . . .
You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.Heb_7:1-3,15-17

01-19-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 19, 2021
May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our hearts, that we may know what is the hope that belongs to our call. Eph_1:17-18  Alleluia Verse

01-18-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 18, 2021
In the days when he was in the Flesh (Jesus), he offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.  Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered; and when he was made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him. Heb_5:1-10

This work of Jesus’ obedience and sacrifice bridged the gap between mortality and immortality over the chasm of death.  Jesus is that bridge.  And we must believe and obey Him in order to be able to traverse that chasm.  What glorious hope we have for eternal salvation when we just believe!

01-17-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 17, 2021
(2nd Sunday Ordinary Time, B)
The LORD came and revealed his presence, calling out as before, “Samuel, Samuel!”  Samuel answered, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”  1_Sm_3:3b-10,19

Today’s Scriptures are all about calls and answers.  The key here is to always be alert to the possibility of being called.  And when that call comes, then we’re ready and willing to answer it!

R. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will. Ps_40 Response

John(the Baptist) was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.”  The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.  Jn_1:35-42

John called, and the disciples listened and followed.

Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus.  He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” — which is translated Christ. ibid

Andrew called Simon to Jesus.  And Jesus called Simon by the name Peter.  So, how are we called, beloved?  Called to identity, called to follow, called act!  Maybe all of them!  Jesus is calling every one of us.  Are we hearing him?

01-16-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 16, 2021
The word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart. Heb_4:12-16

Reference:  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Jn_1:1

JESUS!

Some scribes who were Pharisees saw that Jesus was eating with sinners and tax collectors and said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”  Jesus heard this and said to them, “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.” Mk_2:13-17

Funny, sometimes, beloved, we don’t even realize that He’s speaking to and about us!  The Pharisees were sitting right there among all those ‘other’ sinners and with their physician, Jesus, and they didn’t realize that he was speaking about them needing His help as well.  Are we ever in the situation of judging others just to find out that we’re just as bad, if not worse than those we’re condemning.

Open your hearts to the Word, beloved, in Scripture and directly from the mouth of Jesus.  You just might be amazed at what you find!!! (I’m constantly in this same situation!!!)

Blessed  be God in His great mercy.

01-15-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 15, 2021
Let us be on our guard while the promise of entering into his rest remains, that none of you seem to have failed. Heb_4:1-5,11

Jesus said to the suspicious Scribes, “Why are you thinking such things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, pick up your mat and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins on earth” – he said to the paralytic, “I say to you, rise, pick up your mat, and go home.” He rose, picked up his mat at once, and went away in the sight of everyone. Mk_2:1-12

Today’s Gospel passage describes a very curious, you might say, peculiar series of events.  Sure we’ve heard it a hundred times.  And we might even think we understand it.  So let’s look a little closer.

On the surface level, we can see that the word had clearly gotten out that Jesus was a healer.  So when He returned home, of course, all the neighbors, the sick, the lame and the paralyzed either wanted to see it for themselves, or to find their own healing “Rest” from a life of illness.  And, naturally, there was a crowd.

And if you truly believed, and if you had a strong enough need, like the friends and family of that paralyzed man, you might do – just about anything, even to the extreme of breaking into someone’s house, in order to get a chance to experience Jesus yourself.  And so it was done, a broken roof, some grit and sweat, and the goal was at hand.

But then, there was that curious response of Jesus . . .

It wasn’t: “Hey, what have you done to my roof?” And it wasn’t, “Hey, no butting in line here.” And it wasn’t even, “Go, your faith has healed you.”  Instead, Jesus said, “Child, your sins are forgiven.”

Who said anything about sins?  And it makes us wonder: Did Jesus say this just to provoke the Temple authorities?  Was it said to subtlety appease the peoples’ ill-conceived notion – that unexplained illness really is God’s punishment for sin?  Or was it, more likely, another of the many ways, that Jesus wanted to manifest His Divinity, as God’s Son?

You see, beloved, this was the first time in Mark’s Gospel, that Jesus expressed His Authority in forgiveness, in the Mercy of God, and not in His punishment.

And yet, it really upset the Scribes, because there was a set system for forgiveness, that Jesus was overriding here. There were offerings that had to be made to the priest.  There were sacrifices to God.  And it all had to occur – ONLY through the Temple.

“Who but God alone can forgive sins?  This was unheard of, blasphemous, even ‘unconstitutional!’”

And yet, if that’s the case, we’d be living in a pretty sorry state of Community.  YES, we need God’s forgiveness for every infraction against Him and against our neighbor.  But if WE don’t forgive our neighbor’s sins against us, and if WE don’t seek their forgiveness for our sins against them, then that would, pretty much BE – the end of the loving Community that Jesus so sought to create, and that we so cherish – as Baptized Children of God.

You see, whenever we carry the burden of sin, there’s an effort, there’s a weight, there are shackles that bind us, that paralyze us from the true Freedom, the Rest, the Joy that God wants for all of us.

And the balm, the antidote, the vaccine that soothes, that heals and that protects us is the Mercy, the Forgiveness and the Repentance that only LOVE can bring.

When we drop the burden of our sins through repentance, when we forgive as we would like to be forgiven, and when we seek forgiveness from those whom we have hurt, then, in Love, we will find that “Rest” that God promised through our faith and devotion to His Son and our Lord, Jesus Christ.

And then, in that Rest, all that’s left for us to do, in this mortal state of ours, until we reach that Heavenly Rest, is to be on our guard against all the temptations that can make us fall from that Glorious state of Grace that Forgiveness brings to us.

This is the WORK of Rest.

And, thanks be to God, that we’ve been strengthened by the Sacraments and gifted with the Holy Spirit as our shield, against those temptations, through Christ Jesus, our Savior.

01-14-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 14, 2021
Forty years I was wearied of that generation;
I said: “This people’s heart goes astray,
they do not know my ways.”
Therefore I swore in my anger:
“They shall never enter my rest.” Ps_95

So, be on guard, beloved, that your heart never goes astray.  For this “rest” of God’s is the one thing we most greatly aspire to.  To rest in the loving arms of our God!

01-13-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 13, 2021
Since the children share in blood and Flesh, Jesus likewise shared in them, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the Devil, and free those who through fear of death had been subject to slavery all their life. . . .
Because he himself was tested through what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested. Heb_2:14-18

He is truly our brother in the flesh and in the faith.  Never forget the help Jesus has to offer us in our deepest, darkest of trials.  St. John tells us that “there is no fear in Love.”  And love and light is where we’re headed, not hatred, death and darkness.  So there is no fear in death, but hope and joy and life!

01-12-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 12, 2021
For it was fitting that he, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the leader to their salvation perfect through suffering.

God is the “he” in this first sentence.  We are the children.  And the “leader” is Jesus, who leads us to our salvation.

He who consecrates and those who are being consecrated all have one origin.

Jesus consecrates and we are being consecrated.  And our universal origin, the origin of all is God our Father.

Therefore, he is not ashamed to call them “brothers” saying: ‘I will proclaim your name to my brethren, in the midst of the assembly I will praise you.’ Heb_2:5-12

Jesus is not ashamed to call us brothers to whom He proclaims and praises the Name of God.

All because of our Faith in Jesus and our love for God, in the unity of the Holy Spirit.  AMEN!

01-11-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 11, 2021
After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the Gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfillment. The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel.” Mk_1:14-20

And what is that “Gospel” good news?  God has come to save His people – AGAIN!  But this time it is different from all the other times.  This time they will not be picked up and placed in safety.  This time it will be up to them to accept Him.  And He will show His (human, yet divine) face directly to them. Will they believe?  Will they conjecture, contrive and doubt?  Or will they unwaveringly place all their trust in Him, in Jesus?

Some did, while others didn’t.  And the ones with the loudest mouths, as today, thought they won!  But in reality they really were the losers.  While the winners kept on praying for themselves and for their oppressors.

WE believe, beloved.  And because of that belief we know the end of the story.  Yet, we will keep on praying for our world and for our oppressors, because we know that God really doesn’t want to see ANYONE lose.  Jesus gave us the choice!  And we choose LIFE!  We choose LOVE!  We choose Jesus!

01-10-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 10, 2021
(The Baptism of the Lord)
It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came from the heavens,  “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Mk_1:7-11

The tearing, the dove and the voice.  This baptism is not an easy task beloved.  It takes a tearing away from the old and into the new.  A breaking open like a nut with a nut-cracker.  It takes a bird dropping upon you (and you know what birds do…).  And it involves a voice, a voice rumbling, shouting and echoing.

And once that is past there is a pouring forth of love, like the warm waters of a morning shower.  There is a peace, like the peaceful flutter of the white wings of a dove – the peace of the Holy Spirit.  And there is a soothing voice of appraisal.  “You are My beloved children!”  “Listen to My Son” and you will be blessed beyond your wildest imaginations.

Yes, Baptism is both scary and wonderful.  But more than anything it is Salvation, it is our ticket to true life in Christ, it is the doorway eternal life – only possible through our faith in Jesus.  “Remember me” said He.  “And I will be with you til the end of the age.”

01-09-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 9, 2021
Brothers and sisters, We know that we belong to God, and the whole world is under the power of the Evil One.  We also know that the Son of God has come and has given us discernment to know the one who is true.  And we are in the one who is true,
in his Son Jesus Christ.  1_Jn_5:14-21

Are we living that Truth, beloved?  Or are we immersed in the falsehood, the idolatry of the world?  Trust in God alone.  Discern every word and deed through the Holy Spirit, and you will know the truth (and the Truth will set you free from all the hypocrisy, all the lies).

01-08-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 8, 2021
Today’s Scripture passage from 1st John is all too good to just pull out one little quote.  Actually the whole letter, which isn’t that long, is totally awesome.  It’s a great lesson in theology about what we believe and why!

Beloved: Who indeed is the victor over the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

This is the one who came through water and Blood, Jesus Christ, not by water alone, but by water and Blood.

. . . not just by John’s (water) baptism of repentance, but through the redeeming Blood of Jesus Christ.

The Spirit is the one who testifies, and the Spirit is truth. So there are three who testify, the Spirit, the water, and the Blood,  and the three are of one accord.

Thus, in our Baptism, we receive the Holy Spirit as well as redemption, reunion with the Father and union with Jesus.

If we accept human testimony, the testimony of God is surely greater.  Now the testimony of God is this, that he has testified on behalf of his Son. Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony within himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar by not believing the testimony God has given about his Son.

Call God a liar?  How absurd!  And yet, there are those who still do.  (But as we’ve said yesterday, we love them anyway!)

And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.  Whoever possesses the Son has life; whoever does not possess the Son of God does not have life.  I write these things to you so that you may know that you have eternal life, you who believe in the name of the Son of God. 1_Jn_5:5-13

If we truly understood the extreme suffering of life without God (hell), beloved, (suffering that makes every challenge we have in this life – pale) we would not wish that pain on anyone, even our worst of enemies.  And that gives us a mission in life . . .

To save souls!

(by bringing them to Jesus)

01-07-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 7, 2021
(St. Raymond of Penafort, Priest)
Beloved, we love God because he first loved us.  If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother, he is a liar; for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen.  This is the commandment we have from him: Whoever loves God must also love his brother. 1_Jn_4:19-5:4

“And who is my brother?” the Pharisee would ask.  Well, when God created Adam and Eve – all of humanity descended from them, so you might say that we are all brothers and sisters.

“But I remember that story.  There was a good son and a bad son.  And the good son was killed.  And badness filled the world.” (Though, as the story went, there was later another son who was also good.)

So God decided to cleanse the world and leave behind only one family, that of Noah.  And there again, Noah, a descendant of the “good” son, would repopulate the world, making us all brothers and sisters, the children of Noah.

Generations later, after many, many good sons and bad sons, Jesus came to reconcile us ALL to God, our Father – IF we so chose.  And in choosing to accept that reconciliation, we became spiritual brothers and sisters through our Baptism into Christ.  And yet, many did not choose to follow Jesus, to believe.  Does that, then make them any less our brothers and sisters?  No!

The bosses who fired me, the church who dismissed me, the child who disowned me, the neighbor who tails me because she doesn’t like the speed limit, the political party who insists on killing the unborn, legalizing drugs and flooding our borders with criminals without discerning the good from the evil . . . they’re all my brothers and sisters, regardless of what they’ve done to me or to others.

Jesus is calling us to love!  It doesn’t mean that we have to accept their philosophies, their harm, their ignorance, or even their total lack of love.  But we are called not to hate.  It’s so easy to hate, beloved, when we are victims.  And yet EVERYONE is a victim of something or someone.  A wise man once said, if we were to embrace “an eye for an eye” philosophy, the entire world would be blind. . . Save for those who’ve learned the discipline of LOVE!

God really doesn’t want a world of blind people.  That’s why Jesus came – to teach us how to love!

01-06-21 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

January 6, 2021
(St. Andre Bessette, Religious)
Beloved, if God so loved us, we also must love one another.
No one has ever seen God. Yet, if we love one another, God remains in us,and his love is brought to perfection in us.  . . .

God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him. In this is love brought to perfection among us, that we have confidence on the day of judgment because as he is, so are we in this world.

There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment, and so one who fears is not yet perfect in love.  1_Jn_4:11-18

Tossed about in a boat on the sea, the apostles DID fear.  Jesus was not with them, and their love was not yet perfect.  Then . . .

About the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea.  He meant to pass by them.  But when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and cried out.  They had all seen him and were terrified.  But at once he spoke with them, “Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid!”  He got into the boat with them and the wind died down. Mk_6:45-52

Perfect love drives out fear, beloved.  It’s something we need to constantly work on.  What is it that we fear?  Loss of a loved one, loss of a job, ghosts and vampires, darkness, heights, drowning, Covid???  Think about it.  With love, with Jesus, with the Holy Spirit within us, there really is nothing to fear, not even death.  Because even death will bring us something better!  Love.  The perfect solution!  And Jesus will teach us how!

(St. John Neumann, Bishop)
Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love. In this way the love of God was revealed to us: God sent his only-begotten Son into the world so that we might have life through him. In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins.  1_Jn_4:7-10

LOVE!

(St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Religious)
You belong to God, children, and you have conquered them, for the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 1_Jn_3:22-4:6

And the one who is in us, beloved, IS the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus has given to all who believe in Him.  That’s us!  We belong to God.  Listen to the Holy Spirit within yourself and He will guide you to all peace and joy – despite what the “world” would have us believe!

The Epiphany of the Lord
Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you. See, darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples; but upon you the LORD shines, and over you appears his glory.  Is_60:1-6

Yes, darkness may have covered the world, beloved, but the Light of Christ shines from us.  We are His glory because we trust in Him.  We have faith in Him and we have hope because of Him.

Today’s epiphany is not just the appearance of the Lord to the Israelites in Jerusalem, but His appearance, as well, to the Magi, who represent everyone else in our world, who are not Israelites.  Jesus’ salvation is for all mankind, not just the Jews.  Whoever believes in Him will be saved by their faith, by their trust and by their hope.

Let your light shine in the darkness, beloved.  And it will illuminate not only yourselves but the darkness of the world as well.

(Ss. Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzen, Bishops and Doctors of the Church)
John the Baptist said: “I am the voice of one crying out in the desert, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’  Jn_1:19-28

How do we “make straight the way of the Lord” beloved?

Well, we begin with ourselves.  We get rid of everything in us that is crooked or bent.  Do we have bent attitudes towards eating or smoking, or laziness, or cursing, or other appetites within us that we just can’t seem to control?  Make straight the way of the Lord!  If we can’t do it ourselves, beloved, then seek out help.  There are support groups, priests, therapists and friends who would be more than willing to help us.  And rely especially on the Lord Jesus Himself.  What better way to make straight the way of the Lord than to seek Him out ourselves.  He is always there to guide us, to nudge us,  to lead us, and to make our way straight for Him!

(Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God)

It’s probably the tenth time today, that I’ve had to cross out 2020 and change it to 2021.  It’ll take a little while to get used to the new year.  But it’s also a blessing to know, that not just today, and not just this new year, but every day we have the ability to shake free of the old, cross out the past, and make something better out of it.  Something that’s new, that’s clean, that’s wholesome, that’s a blessing to others.

Our new header picture today reflects the extraordinary.  Having taken this shot of the Gulf of Mexico myself, in the midst of the national Covid fiasco, it truly was a respite of joy in a terror stricken world.  And it’s exactly what we would dream of and like to see in our new year.  It is a picture of hope, a picture of dreams, a picture of peace, a picture of life.  Not secluded and isolated and fearful, but in the light of our Blessed Mother, Jesus’ Mother, we are filled with joy and hope for a better year than the one we’ve just survived.  Day by day, living in the love of Jesus, we WILL have those days, despite what the world wants us to fear.  And we will BE God’s light in that world!

The LORD bless you and keep you!
The LORD let his face shine upon
you, and be gracious to you!
The LORD look upon you kindly and
give you peace! Nm_6:22-27

And may Almighty God bless you this year and always, in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
AMEN!
