Daily Mass Quotes – January 2012

Then the LORD said (to Elijah), “Go outside and stand on the mountain before the LORD; the LORD will be passing by.”  A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the LORD–but the LORD was not in the wind.  After the wind there was an earthquake–but the LORD was not in the earthquake.  After the earthquake there was fire–but the LORD was not in the fire.  After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound.

When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave. A voice said to him, “Elijah, why are you here?”      1 Kings 19:11-13

Why are YOU here?

Was it to discover magnificent colors?  Was it to find colorful music or awesome videos?  Was it just curiosity?  Was it accidental?  Were you really looking for God, for Hope, for true LOVE somewhere in this menagerie we call the web?  Or were you just hiding in a cave, waiting on the Lord to whisper in your ear – a Word – LIFE!  Life, it’s in You!  And YOU are beautiful in the Eyes of God, no matter what the world may say or think.

You are Loved, beloved!!

Every day the Lord whispers in our ears – Words of HOPE, Words of LOVE, and maybe not even words – just His JOY in our hearts.  Let’s follow the Scriptures of our daily Mass and see if we can catch those Words – simple but beautiful Whispers to the Wind . . .

Quotes for reflection:

01-31-12
(St. John Bosco)
David “said as he wept,
“My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom!
If only I had died instead of you,
Absalom, my son, my son!” 2 Sm 18-19

After all of that!  Quite a soap-opera story.
The love of Father for son overrides ALL transgressions!

.
Jairus the synagogue official said to Jesus,
My daughter is at the point of death.
Please, come lay your
hands
on her that she may get well and live.

Mk 5:21-43

Even at the risk of expulsion from the synagogue,
The love of Father for daughter overrides all propriety.

He (Jesus) took the child by the hand and said to her,
‘Talitha koum,’

which means, ‘Little girl, I say to you, arise!’

Koum!
Arise, beloved, your Father LOVES you!

God Loves us, more than we could ever, ever imagine !!!!

Happy Birthday Christie!

01-30-12
As David went up the Mount of Olives, he wept without ceasing.

One thousand years later another King wept on that same mount.

David and his men continued on the road,
while Shimei kept abreast of them on the hillside,
all the while cursing and throwing stones and dirt (at David) as he went.” 2 Sm 16

It’s what the “Lost” do.

When he (Jesus) got out of the boat, at once a man from
the tombs who had an unclean spirit met him.” Mk 5:1-20

We too, brothers and sisters, must be very wary when we step out of that boat.
They’ll be there to throw stones and dirt.
They’ll be there to curse and insult.
They’ll want us to join them.
Or they’ll want us to die.

But BE STRONG, beloved.
And put your TOTAL faith in Jesus!
And Jesus WILL see you through.

01-29-12
(Fourth Sunday Ordinary Time B)
Jesus – “taught them as one having authority…

No higher Authority exists!

01-28-12
(St. Thomas Aquinas)
David said to Nathan, ‘I have sinned against the LORD.’
Nathan answered David: ‘The LORD on his part has forgiven your sin:
you shall not die.  But…’”  2 Sm 12

Jesus “said to the sea, ‘Quiet! Be still!’
The wind ceased and there was great calm.” Mt 4:35-41

My heart groans within me, Lord.
Please quiet the roaring of the waves around me.
Forgive my transgressions and strengthen my Faith in You!
That we may be One in PEACE.

Be Still . . . . . . . . . . . . Be Still

01-27-12
Jesus said, “This is how it is with the Kingdom of God;
it is as if a man were to scatter seed on the land and would sleep
and rise night and day
and the seed would sprout and grow,
he knows not how.”  Mk 4:26-34

From the roof he (King David) saw a woman bathing, who was very beautiful.
David had inquiries made about the woman and was told,
“She is Bathsheba, daughter of Eliam, and wife of Joab’s armor bearer
Uriah the Hittite.”
Then David sent messengers and took her.”  2 Sm 1

Seeds GROW when planted!

Uriah the Hittite (Link)

01-26-12
(Sts. Timothy and Titus)
Jesus said, “Anyone who has ears to hear ought to hear.

Maybe all of the whispers aren’t going solely to the wind.
Is anyone out there?
Somebody loves you!!

01-25-12
(Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul)
Jesus said,
Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.
Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved;
whoever does not believe will be condemned.”  Mk 16:15-18

It’s THAT simple.
It’s that beautiful.
And the Gospel we proclaim is called,
LOVE.

01-24-12
(St. Francis de Sales)
Then David “came dancing before the LORD with abandon,

True JOY!

Jesus said, “whoever does the will of God
is my brother and sister and mother.

True FAMILY!

01-23-12
Jesus said, “If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.

. . as well as a country, a city, a corporation or even a family.
and we wonder why progress is sometimes so slow . . .

And if a kingdom is not divided against itself, that kingdom must take a stand
for what is good and honorable and right and just,
LIFE!

01-22-12
(Third Sunday Ordinary Time-B)

Jesus said,
Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.

To feed the world the Gospel of LIFE.

.

That God Loves us,
no matter what!

01-21-12
David said of Saul and Jonathan,
How can the warriors have fallen?

Sometimes, even those we put our faith and trust in as our leaders, our rocks, fall.
It is then we must remember, that ONLY God is our true Rock!
Jesus came that we might have Life, eternal.
We might admire, acknowledge and follow our earthly models.
But we place our trust in Jesus, alone.
He IS our salvation!

01-20-12
David said, “The LORD forbid that I should do such a thing to my master (Saul),
the LORD’s anointed, as to lay a hand on him,  for he is the LORD’s anointed.” 1 Sm 24

ALL of the baptized are the LORD’s anointed.
MERCY
not hatred, anger, jealousy, revenge . . .

(Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us!)

01-19-12
Jonathan then spoke well of David to his father Saul,”  1 Sm 18-19

FRIENDS
protect one another
stand up for one another
guide, teach and learn from one another
Love one another!

01-18-12
Young David said, “it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves.” 1 Sm 17
Blessed be the LORD, my rock,” Ps 144

Jesus said, “Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath rather than to do evil,
to save life rather than to destroy it?

Can a “law” be so twisted, so confused, that death could take precedence over life?
Abortion, capital punishment, religious oppression, revenge, greed . . .
Sometimes the line of distinction is very fine.
But, LIFE must ALWAYS be the answer!
And the determiner must be LOVE,
must be, God,
our ROCK.

01-17-12
(St. Anthony)
The LORD said (to Samuel), “There – anoint him, for this is he!” (David)

 – – – ‘Holy’ Orders – – –
(Sometimes we just need to listen and DO.)

Jesus said, “The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath.

– – – Holy Recommendations – – –
(Sometimes the ‘recommendation’ is for our own good.)
(We need our rest too!)

01-16-12
Samuel said to King Saul,
Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission than the fat of rams.
For a sin, like divination is rebellion, and
presumption is the crime of idolatry
.” 1 Sm 15

LOVE is not presumptive!
It is totally submissive and obedient.
That’s why most people don’t understand Love.
Love God first – with all our heart and mind and soul and strength.
Then we’ll discover true love for the world.
(even the lost asses.. see 01-14-12)

01-15-12
(Second Sunday Ordinary Time-B)
Avoid immorality.
The body is not for immorality, but for the Lord…
Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?
“. . . the immoral person sins against his own body.
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you,
whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?
For you have been purchased at a price.
Therefore glorify God in your body.” 1 Cor 6

Tough words in an immoral society.
But there IS Hope.
The TV does have an ON/OFF button, as does the computer.
Our eyelids can close and we can pray instead of glaring
at those magazines in the checkout line.
Pray for strength and Jesus will be with you!

Do you know what the difference between
Immorality and Immortality is?
T (the cross of Christ)
who brings us ETERNAL LIFE!

01-14-12
There was no other child of Israel more handsome than Saul;
he stood head and shoulders above the people.
Now the asses of Saul’s father, Kish, had wandered off.
Kish said to his son Saul, ‘Take one of the servants with you
and go out and hunt for the asses.’”  1 Sm 9
.   .   .
They asked among themselves,
Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
Jesus heard this and said to them,
“Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do.
I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”  Mk 2:13-17

Hunting asses.
(no pun or insult intended, gee, that might even be us??!!)

Naaaaaaah.

01-13-12
Jesus said to the man,
Child, your sins are forgiven.

Doing whatever it takes to get to Jesus,
if we truly believe in Him,
our sins will be forgiven and
our ills healed!

Blessed is she/he who believes!
Blessed are YOU beloved!

01-12-12
Of Jesus, “He remained outside in deserted places,
and people kept coming to him from everywhere.

In an old movie called, “Field of Dreams”
there was a quote that went like this,
“If you build it, (they) will come.”

From Jesus, there was no keeping them away!
So it should be with us!!

If we build that space for Jesus in our hearts,
there will be no keeping Him away.
He will come!

01-11-12
Samuel answered, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” 1 Sm 3

R. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.

Jesus said, “Let us go on to the nearby villages
that I may preach there also.  For this purpose have I come.” Mk 1:38

To do Your will, O Lord.
This is WHY we are here!
So speak to us Lord, please, and we will listen.
We’ll close our ears to the world, that we may hear, only Your…
‘Whispers’!

01-10-12
Hannah said, “my prayer has been prompted by my deep sorrow and misery.

A prayer of devotion, desperation and dedication by a barren mom-to-be.
The answer, a son, a mighty prophet, Samuel, who heard the voice of God.
A prayer of Thanksgiving and Exaltation,
which was echoed by another Mom,
for Her Son and His Son,
Jesus!

No more sorrow.
LOVE

01-09-12
(The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord )
a bruised reed he shall not break,
and a smoldering wick he shall not quench,

The “unfixable,” are they crumpled up and discarded,
or nurtured with compassion and at least
renewed in spirit?

These are our Beloved.

01-08-12
(The Epiphany of the Lord)
magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying,
“Where is the newborn king of the Jews?  We saw his star at its rising

After their audience with the king they set out.
And behold, the star that they had seen
at its rising preceded them,
until it came
and stopped over the place where the child was.

They were overjoyed at seeing the star,”  Mt 2:1-12

A King, a star, wise men, EPIPHANY.
the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body,
and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.
Eternal Life – for ALL!

01-07-12
If anyone sees his brother sinning,
if the sin is not deadly,
he should pray to God and he will give him life.” 1 Jn 5:16

..the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ …
…the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine…” Jn 2

The Power of Prayer.

01-06-12
Beloved:  Who indeed is the victor over the world
but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

This is the one who came through water and Blood,
Jesus Christ,

not by water alone, but by water and Blood.

The Spirit is the one who testifies, and the Spirit is truth.

God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
Whoever possesses the Son has life;”  1 Jn 5
–  –  –  –  –  –  –  –
Jesus “was baptized in the Jordan by John.
On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open
and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him.
And a voice came from the heavens,
‘You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.’”  Mk 1:7-11

The (definitive) TESTIMONY !

Belief = Life (eternal)

01-05-12
(St. John Neumann)
And Jesus said to him (Nathanael),
‘Follow me.’

“as I have loved you, so are you to love one another…”
F O L L O W   Jesus !

01-04-12
(St. Elizabeth Ann Seton)
John said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.

Why a lamb?  Spotless, pure, young,
the symbol of Jewish sacrifice to God
for the forgiveness of sins.

Referenced here in Jn 1:35 as the Messiah,
the Savior, Jesus Christ our Lord.

How blessed are we to merit such Love!!!

01-03-12
(The Most Holy Name of Jesus)
John said, “I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from the sky
and remain upon him.  I did not know him, but the one who sent me to
baptize with water told me, ‘On whomever you see the Spirit come down
and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’

John’s was a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
Jesus’ is a baptism of new birth in the Holy Spirit.
A baptism offered to everyone at Pentecost.
A baptism we receive through the Sacraments
of Baptism and Confirmation!

NEW BIRTH
as Children of God!

01-02-12
(Saints Basil and Gregory of Nazianzen)
John said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the desert,
‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’

A new year, a new start, a new me.
Show me that straight way, Lord,
that I may walk only in your direction.
Bless us Lord, as we praise and exalt you always!

01-01-12
The Octave Day of the Nativity of the Lord
Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God
The LORD bless you and keep you!
The LORD let his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you!
The LORD look upon you kindly and give you peace!”  Nm 6

When eight days were completed for his circumcision,
he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel
before he was conceived in the womb.

And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart.”  Lk 2

A blessed and happy and safe New Year to all!

Just as my own personal reminder,
I began the new year with this tune stuck in my head,
while preparing for today’s homily.
It is a 1970 Beatles tune, written by Paul McCartney, about a dream
he had of his mother, Mary, who had died many years earlier.
From that tune, I had always thought of OUR Mother,
Jesus’ mother, and her words to us as well:

Whisper words of wisdom.
Let it be.

LOVE!
