(The Conversion of St. Paul, Apostle)
St. Paul said, as “I drew near to Damascus, about noon, a great light from the sky suddenly shone around me. I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’ I replied, ‘Who are you, sir?’ And he said to me, ‘I am Jesus the Nazorean whom you are persecuting.’ Acts_22:3-16
Are we persecuting Jesus in others, beloved? Paul didn’t even imagine that he was persecuting the Man himself, he was persecuting those who believed in Him. And yet, and yet, every time we persecute those who don’t believe as we do, those who look different, those who belong to other political or ethnic or cultural groups, we are persecuting Jesus as well. Jesus didn’t differentiate Himself from others. He just tried to get them to open their hearts to Him too. Maybe instead of persecuting, we need to see with new eyes, beloved, all who are different from us. And then to love them as well! Just like Jesus.
