(2nd Sunday of Lent, B)
As they were coming down from the mountain, he (Jesus) charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from the dead meant. Mk_9:2-10
Ever get in that situation, beloved, where someone says something to you, and you have absolutely no idea what it meant? And you felt a little embarrassed to ask them what they meant. Or else the conversation was moving along at such a fast pace, that you actually never got a chance to ask. Well, the disciples were sure that whatever Jesus said, it was most likely important. So, they obediently complied with His order to keep the whole matter a secret until later. Could you imagine holding that kind of secret inside? The Transfiguration of Jesus! It was glorious! It was mysterious! It was almost like a dream! You almost had to poke yourself to decide if it was real or not.
But it WAS real! Peter was so flabbergasted that he started to babble something about tents. What does one say when they’re presented with a miraculous and breathtaking vision? Well, it was all just another piece in the huge puzzle of God’s plan for Jesus and for us, beloved. Yes, there was a tie between Moses, the Law Giver, Elijah, the Prophet and Jesus the Reconciler. Reconciliation would now be possible between man, who had such a hard time keeping the laws, who had such a hard time believing and obeying the prophetic warnings, and God, their Father, who only wants the very best for us, His creation. And it was all there in this vision, as Jesus discussed His demise and His glorification, through His passion and resurrection, with the “elders” who anxiously awaited His return to heaven with them.
And you know what, we still don’t understand it all. But, praise be to God, some day we will, thanks be to Jesus!
