06-14-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

At the mountain of God, Horeb, Elijah came to a cave, where he took shelter. But the word of the LORD came to him, “Go outside and stand on the mountain before the LORD; the LORD will be passing by.”

Sometimes we get messages that seem impossible, maybe improbable, or just undesirable to us.  But we listen anyway and we wait to see what we find.

A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was fire, but the LORD was not in the fire.

Well, just as we expected, it was simply not to be!  But God calls us to be patient, to be persistent, to TRUST in Him.

After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound. When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave. A voice said to him, “Elijah, why are you here?”  1_Kgs_19:9a,11-16

You see, beloved, persistence ALWAYS pays off, especially when it has to do with God.  And after all that, what does God want?  He wants to know about us.  He loves us and actually knows us even better than we know ourselves.  So, why was Elijah hiding in that cave?  Well the whole world seemed to be wanting to kill him.  And if life was worth anything, Elijah knew that he was powerless against them.  So he hid.  But in the meantime, God was telling him, “Well, seems you just forgot about me, again!”  Remember, that with God, “we can do all things” as St. Paul reminds us.

So listen, beloved.  Listen for the whispers.  Maybe they’re telling us something impossible, maybe something improbable, maybe even something undesirable to us.  But in those whispers are the answers to all of our deepest and even secret problems.  Life!  Love!  God!  In Christ Jesus, beloved, we are SAVED!  Trust in Him!
