Elisha left and followed Elijah as his attendant.  1_Kgs_19:19-21

Being called by Elijah to be his follower, a prophet in training, Elisha first went back home to sever all ties to parents, work and family.  He clearly burned all bridges to his past, killing the oxen that plowed the fields and offering their cooked flesh as a “last supper” before leaving.  In time Elisha would receive double the “Spirit” of Elijah and perform many more miraculous deeds as graced by God.  Sometimes, beloved, it takes the burning of bridges to truly make a difference in our lives.  Letting go of materialistic baggage, past hurts, lost loves, and uniting with Jesus can bring us life twice as valuable in Spirit.  Jesus calls all of us to “come.”
