(Our Lady of Lourdes)
People brought to him (Jesus) a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him off by himself away from the crowd.  He put his finger into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, “Ephphatha!” (that is, “Be opened!”) And immediately the man’s ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly.  Mk_7:31-37

Do you recognize that Aramaic word, Ephphatha, beloved?  It’s said in every Baptism.  It is a healing prayer.  It is an enlightening prayer.  It’s an awakening prayer.  So yes, even though we were baptized with those same words, that same prayer, sometimes we can be blinded by the world around us.  We can get so wrapped up in the darkness around us that we begin to become blind, deaf and mute ourselves.  And it’s then that we again need to ask Jesus and the Holy Spirit to help us, to heal us with this same prayer anew.  “Be opened!”  Be opened to the light and the life and the love all around us beloved.  God has the power to make us into whole new persons.  Trust in Him!  And see the beauty instead of the darkness!
