The LORD said to Abram: “Go forth from the land of your kinsfolk and from your father’s house to a land that I will show you. “I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you. All the communities of the earth shall find blessing in you.” Gn_12:1-9
Today we begin the foundational study of the ancient ancestors of our faith. It’s a wonderful story, a covenant story. It’s a love story! And in this very first interaction between God and Abram we see God’s promise of blessing through Abram to the whole world. THERE is our Jesus! And just as Jesus said yesterday, “whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father” Mt_10:26-33, we see in God’s promise to Abram and us the same caveat. When we faithfully follow, when we faithfully bless those of God’s creation, we will be blessed as well. But when we deny, when we judge, when we persecute others, we will receive the same treatment from God and others too. We know that God loves each and every one of us, good or bad, faithful or ignorant of faith in God, God loves us all! So, as Jesus teaches us, we should love one anther in the same way. Maybe we don’t always agree with one another, but that doesn’t give us any right to judge, condemn or persecute. LOVE!
