Jesus said, “For there is nothing hidden that will not become visible, and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light. Take care, then, how you hear.” Lk_8:16-18
Hmmm, “light,” “hiding,” “secret,” “visibility”?! It’s a call to recognize our own visibility to God and to the world. No secrets! It’s also a window to the truth (or untruth) of the world. When we live God’s Word, that truth is obvious! It’s also a call for us to be very careful in how we are hearing what others are saying. Are we putting our own bias, our own prejudgments, our own answers to questions before we even hear them in entirety? Jesus tells us today to take care of how we listen, how we hear. When we hear the Words of Jesus, the Word of God, we are called to be His light to the world around us by using those words to enliven that world, not judge it, not blast it like a laser, but with compassion, with love, allow them to feel, to learn themselves, the compassionate love and mercy of our God!
