Elijah’s Whisper – My Whisper

Bubbles2Then the LORD said (to Elijah), “Go outside and stand on the mountain before the LORD; the LORD will be passing by.”  A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the LORD – but the LORD was not in thewind.  Afterthe wind there was an earthquake – but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was fire – but the LORD was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound.  When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave. A voice said to him, “Elijah, why are you here?” 1 Kings 19:11-13

Why are YOU here, beloved?

Was it to discover magnificent colors? Was it to find colorful music or awesome videos? Was it just curiosity? Was it accidental? Were you really looking for God, for Hope, for true LOVE somewhere in this menagerie we call the web?

silenceOr were you just hiding in a cave, waiting on the Lord to Whisper in your ear – a Word – LIFE! Life, it’s in You! And YOU are beautiful in the Eyes of God, no matter what the world may say or think.

You are Loved!!

Every day the Lord whispers in our ears – Words of HOPE, Words of LOVE, and maybe not even words – just His JOY in our hearts.

Let’s follow the Scriptures of our daily Mass and see if we can catch those Words – simple but beautiful – Whispers to the Wind . . .

05-31-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

May 31, 2024
(Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary)
Brothers and sisters: Let love be sincere; hate what is evil, hold on to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; anticipate one another in showing honor. Do not grow slack in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.
Rejoice in hope, endure in affliction, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the holy ones, exercise hospitality. Bless those who persecute you, bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Have the same regard for one another; do not be haughty but associate with the lowly; do not be wise in your own estimation.  Rom 12:9-16

One to hang on our wall, to engrave in our minds and to wrap around our hearts!

05-30-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

May 30, 2024
A blind man named Bartimaeus kept shouting out to Jesus, “Son of David, have pity on me.” . . . Jesus said to him in reply, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man replied to him, “Master, I want to see.” Jesus told him, “Go your way; your faith has saved you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.  Mk_10:46-52

A simple interaction, that prompts us to ponder, “What would it take for us to give up our simple-minded, two-fold options of either independently doing everything on our own, sometimes succeeding and often not, or just wallowing in our inadequacy with all the challenges of life?”  Maybe it’s time then, to consider this third way.  Ask of Jesus what we need with full belief that what we’ve asked He will provide.  There’s story after story, example after example of people in the Scriptures who did just that and received exactly what was asked for.  Why not us?  How much faith do we really have?

05-29-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

May 29, 2024
(St. Paul VI, Pope)
Jesus said to His disciples, “whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mk_10:32-45

So, slow down beloved.  Do not allow that worst of all our diseases to eat you alive – the “hurry” disease.  It’s OK to be last in line.  It’s OK not to sit in the front of the classroom or church.  It’s OK to be lowest.  It’s OK to drive the speed limit.  For in it, you will very often find yourself first in what really matters.  First in the Heart of Jesus.  Slow down, and don’t miss life!

05-28-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

May 28, 2024
Peter began to say to Jesus, “We have given up everything and followed you.” Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the Gospel who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age.”  Mk_10:28-31

Count not what you have, but what you’ve given.
Count not what you don’t have, but what others have because of you.
Look not toward the stars, but find them in your very heart.
Then you will be rich beyond description . . .
rich in what really matters!

Jesus!

05-27-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

May 27, 2024
(St. Augustine of Canterbury, Bishop)
Jesus again said to them in reply, “Children, how hard it is to enter the Kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the Kingdom of God.” They were exceedingly astonished and said among themselves, “Then who can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “For men it is impossible, but not for God. All things are possible for God.” Mk_10:17-27

And then, by association, when God is within us, ‘we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.’  Phil 4

05-26-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

May 26, 2024
(Most Holy Trinity)
Jesus said to His disciples, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”  Mt_28:16-20

A Truth, a commission and a promise.  Jesus is all the power, the strength and the wisdom we’ll ever need to “Go and bring His Truth, His Love into the world.”  And we never need fear, for He is with us always! In good times and in bad, in high times and in low, Jesus is with us.  All we need do is remember that Truth!  The Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, AMEN!

05-25-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

May 25, 2024
(St. Bede the Venerable, Priest and Doctor of the Church)
Jesus said, Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the Kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.”  Mk_10:13-16

Faith means having 100% dependence, reliance on what or whom we believe in, even without seeing them.  We all have faith in something.  Where is ours?

05-24-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

May 24, 2024
Do not complain, brothers and sisters, about one another, that you may not be judged.  Jas_5:9-12

Ever notice, beloved, that whatever or whoever we complain about ALWAYS becomes what or who WE become (or already are) ourselves.  And we have enough sayings about glass houses and self-infliction and spite that you’d think we’d finally learn.  As, I’m saying this to myself as well, suck it in, and pray, and love, and love, and love!

05-23-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

May 23, 2024
Jesus said, “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.” Mk_9:41-50

Woe to our world!  Innocence lost.  Belief gone.  A world worshiping their cell phones.  Children enamored with magic, violence, sex, and all kinds of immoral deeds and thoughts, in a culture beset on death.  Pray beloved, for their salvation and lets begin resetting some standards by our own examples. Love!  Even if it hurts! That is the example which Jesus and all the saints offer us.  Boundless love!

05-22-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

May 22, 2024
(St. Rita of Cascia, Religious)
Jesus said, There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me. For whoever is not against us is for us.”  Mk_9:38-40

Hmmmm!  What and whom are we for or against, beloved?  And then, are those choices of ours with or against God’s will?  God is for LIFE.  God is for LOVE.  God is for Unity and peace.  And we know this because this is what Jesus taught us.  And so we should also be FOR the same.  God is for Jesus because He Himself told us “This is my beloved Son.  Listen to Him.” Mt_17:5  And so, if we are FOR God, we must also be FOR Jesus… And if we are for Jesus, we can’t be against Him.  Jesus said, “Whoever is not against us is for us.” So, we should always keep that in mind, as we continue to pray for the Church “nones,” the members of other denominations of Christianity, even the Muslims and Buddhists and Hindus.  We are all God’s children, whether we know if or not!  And we should never be against ANY of God’s children – all of us!  That’s the LOVE of God!

05-21-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

May 21, 2024
Jesus sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” Taking a child, he placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around it, he said to them, “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.” Mk_9:30-37

Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will exalt you. Jas_4:1-10

Maybe the hardest lesson we all need to learn in this life is humility!

Can we ever learn to place others above us?  Can we ever learn to stop trying to make ourselves be the greatest and only thing that exists in all creation?  It’s the ‘way of the world.’  And the truth of the matter is, that the harder we try, the further we get from that goal.  Jesus teaches us all Truth.  The way to the best in life is to humble ourselves and give like there’s no tomorrow!  And the very best in life is knowing that we’ve pleased God by our giving, by our humility!   So, let go and LOVE, beloved!  We will be loved beyond all capacity.  Loved, as the “Children” of God, we are!

05-20-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

May 20, 2024
(Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church)
Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. . . . when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs, but one soldier thrust his lance into his side, and immediately Blood and water flowed out. Jn_19:25-34

Behold our Mother!  Behold her birth Son and her adopted son, and we, her adopted children.  Together with Jesus, in the Holy Spirit, we are one Body, one Body of Christ.  And together as One Family, we are molded into one Church, baptized in the water and enlivened in the blood!  This IS our Church, with Mary as our Mother and one another as brothers and sisters!  What a beautiful family!

05-19-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

May 19, 2024
(Pentecost Sunday)
Ten days after the Ascension of Jesus, When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.  Acts_2:1-11

Sometimes, beloved, God’s voice comes to us in the gentlest of “tiny whispers,” as it did for Elijah.  And other times, like a “strong driving wind,” with fire and drama.  And here on this Jewish Pentecost day, with the Holy Spirit’s descent upon the Apostles, the voice came this time through the apostles themselves.  Voices they were astounded to hear coming from their very mouths.  God has many different ways of working through us!  And the Holy Spirit is His enabler.  All we have to do is let Him!

St. Paul affirmed, Brothers and sisters: No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. . . . As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.”  1_Cor_12:3b-7,12-13

One Body, One Spirit, One Lord and Savior of us All!

Praise be to our God!  Amen, Alleluia!

05-18-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

May 18, 2024
After Paul had arrived in Rome: Three days later he called together the leaders of the Jews. When they had gathered he said to them, “My brothers, although I had done nothing against our people or our ancestral customs, I was handed over to the Romans as a prisoner from Jerusalem. After trying my case the Romans wanted to release me, because they found nothing against me deserving the death penalty. But when the Jews objected, I was obliged to appeal to Caesar, even though I had no accusation to make against my own nation. This is the reason, then, I have requested to see you and to speak with you, for it is on account of the hope of Israel that I wear these chains.” Acts_28:16-20,30-31

And that hope, of course, as we know, stems from their/our belief in Jesus!  Paul, here, nicely summarized the long and excruciating events of his incarceration, and his innocence, as attested to by the Roman leaders.  Unrelentingly zealous for his own new-found faith, Paul even as a prisoner, continues his evangelization for the Lord.  And this, as we know, was not done for any personal gain of his own, but purely in his love, in God’s love, for them all.

05-17-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

May 17, 2024
King Agrippa and Bernice arrived in Caesarea on a visit to Festus. Since they spent several days there, Festus referred Paul’s case to the king, saying, “There is a man here left in custody by Felix. When I was in Jerusalem the chief priests and the elders of the Jews brought charges against him and demanded his condemnation. Acts_25:13b-21

After Jesus had revealed himself to his disciples and eaten breakfast with them, he said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these? Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”. . . Jn_21:15-19

You know, Life deals us many different hands, in its game, from birth to death. Some hands are remarkably wonderful, like: the beauty of nature, the glories of love, the oneness of community and the knowing of our God. And others can be pretty tragic, like: the unrelenting powers of nature, the evil that stems from human pride and hatred, the breakdown of healthy community, and our amnesia, or outright refusal, to recognize and listen to our Creator and Savior. And at the center of some of our most difficult challenges with one another are our own attitudes of betrayal, failure and unacceptance.

Today we see the conclusion of two different examples of human conflict, and two different means of conflict resolution.

In our First Reading, we see Paul, the zealous, Jew-become-Christian, who was now trying to tear down the very walls he helped build (as a Pharisee). And we also see the Jews, who did not look very kindly on Paul’s affront to their Faith. A faith that hinged: on Moses, on their own power, and on their hierarchy, which Jesus found to be pretty oppressive. And in their failed, diplomatic attempt to eliminate Paul, the Jews then resorted to a clandestine murder plot, which also failed.

And Paul, after pulling out all of his aces: his ‘I am a Roman Citizen’ card, his narrow escape from Jerusalem, his appealing to two different local magistrates, and even a king, and then the orating of his very best legal defense; Paul finally resorted to the “flight” side of our “fight or flight” instincts. He appealed for trial in Rome.

You know, sometimes, even despite our worldly self-confidence and wisdom, we find ourselves forgetting to rely on God – in His great wisdom and power to save us. And sometimes, no matter what we personally try to do, God will call us to wherever He wants us, anyway. In Paul’s case it was Rome.

And then we have the story of Peter and Jesus. Sure, we’ve heard the “Feed my Lambs” story a hundred times. And we’re well aware that the Church interprets that three-time confession of Peter’s Love, as his repentance for his triple denial of Jesus, at His trial. But, did we ever look at it from the viewpoint of Jesus?

Here was this obnoxious Peter, who betrayed Him, just as much as Judas did, and even worse than all the other disciples, who just ran away; and rather than chastising Peter, or ignoring him, as we might tend to do, or maybe even, hating Peter for that betrayal, Jesus, instead, points Peter to the Only way that he could learn how to truly forgive himself. By the forgiveness of Jesus, and through Peter’s Love for others, Peter would, over time, learn the true meaning of forgiveness and love, not only for and of himself, but for all of us.

And THERE’s our answer to the BEST way to play the Game of Life. When we plant Love in our own hearts, we reap Love, not only within ourselves, in heaps and in abundance, but we sow that love in the whole world of life around us.

And then, rather than having a world of pointing fingers and poked out eyes, we’ll find ourselves in a world of giving and thanksgiving, a world where there will no longer be the need for forgiveness, for there will be no transgressions against each other nor our God! And it will all be for the very Glory of God Himself! Alleluia, Alleluia!

05-16-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

May 16, 2024
The following night the Lord stood by him (Paul, in the midst of his inquisition by the Jews) and said, “Take courage. For just as you have borne witness to my cause in Jerusalem, so you must also bear witness in Rome.” Acts_22:30;23:6-11

When we listen, beloved, the Lord WILL tell us exactly what He wants of us.  Sometimes it may not seem to make any sense.  But in the end we will know that everything the Lord reveals will be for the good of ourselves and the world around us!  Trust!

05-15-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

May 15, 2024
(St. Isidore the Farmer)
Jesus prayed to His Father for His disciples saying, “They do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world. Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world. And I consecrate myself for them, so that they also may be consecrated in truth.” Jn_17:11b-19

When we believe, beloved, just as Jesus wanted us all to believe, we too will be consecrated in Truth.  Yes, we fall now and again, but in that “Truth,” in that Name of Jesus, we will always come back.  For only in His Name do we find true life, Truth and meaning!  Believe, and live!

05-14-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

May 14, 2024
(St. Matthias, Apostle)
Jesus said to his disciples: “As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. “I have told you this so that my joy might be in you and your joy might be complete. This is my commandment: love one another as I love you.”  Jn_15:9-17

Our assurance.  Jesus’ command.  Our call.  Our reward, JOY!
May sound comforting.  May sound simple.  But may also sound difficult.
All depends on where our center is.  Is it on ourselves?  Or is it on Jesus?
Keep that focus on Jesus and no matter what others may do to us, that Love of His will constantly keep us in His Joy.  Not in pride.  Not in security.  Not even on the Joy, the reward.  Just on His Love!

05-13-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

May 13, 2024
(Our Lady of Fatima)
After the disciples confessed their belief in Jesus, Jesus replied, “Behold, the hour is coming and has arrived when each of you will be scattered to his own home and you will leave me alone. But I am not alone, because the Father is with me. I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world.” Jn_16:29-33

And THERE is our peace, beloved.  Not in our own strength, or wisdom, or knowledge, or authority, because all of that can fall away in an instant.  But Jesus and the Holy Spirit are with us always.  We need to learn to rely on Him alone!  Trust in the Lord, for He “has conquered the world!!! – and every challenge and hurt it can throw upon us.  THERE is our peace!

05-12-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

May 12, 2024
(Solemnity of the Ascension of Jesus Christ)
Jesus said to His disciples, “you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” When he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight. Acts_1:1-11

The Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God. But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs. Mk_16:15-20

“For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate, He suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.”

Having hand-held His disciples for three years, through teething and first steps, through stories and mission trips, through miracles and tragedies, it was now time for Jesus to send His disciples off – ON THEIR OWN, with training wheels removed, and engines almost roaring. Almost, because in just another week, they would receive that final kickstart that would blast them into fervent, heart-felt, zealous ACTION, forever.

And like any truly great story, there’s always that “Happily ever after” moment, and lots of room for a sequel. Our celebration of the Ascension of Jesus today, and His Commissioning of the Apostles, fits both bills in this, the Greatest Story ever told, which, as we know, is still in the telling!

And yet, we’ll often hear people ask, even today, “Why did Jesus have to leave, and in such a dramatic way? Well, just as Jesus would do, we can answer that question with a question of our own. A question that goes like this:

What do all of the following scenarios have in common?
– a Car – without a key,
– a College Degree – without a job,
– a Fig Tree – without figs,
– a Bird – that has never stretched out its wings, and
– a perfectly healthy young Adult who has never left his parent’s home?

You see, IF Jesus didn’t leave the key, offer the job, nourish the tree, encourage the bird, and free the young adult from the apron strings of dependence, just as He freed the Apostles by His Ascension, then, all we’d be left with, is a conglomeration of uselessness!

Instead, not only did He send His disciples off with a Purpose, with Power and Wisdom, with Sacraments and Authority, with Faith and Hope for as glorious a departure as His, but He pointed us in the precise direction to where He IS, and WILL be, right there, next to His Father, waiting for our return, our reunion with Him.

You see, with Jesus at His Father’s side, we discover that there’s nothing we cannot accomplish through His intercession. And if that were not enough, on top of it all, we are given the Guidance, the Love, and the Wisdom of the Holy Spirit, whom we’ll hear more about next week!

So, was this Ascension of Jesus really necessary?

ABSOLUTELY!

Because, it gave us the Freedom, the Responsibility and the Accountability to GO FORTH, and to represent, to Re-Present, Jesus to our world every day, at our work or school, at home with our families, and even with total strangers.

Now, we all know that this Call of Jesus can actually BE pretty challenging, and pretty demanding at times. And that is Exactly WHY we have our Church, our Sacraments and our Leadership!

Did you happen to notice the progression of the Sacraments in our Readings today?

They’re all there, from Baptism, all the way through Anointing of the Sick.

St. Luke, for example, speaks of John’s “Baptism of Repentance,” referring to our Sacrament of Reconciliation, our Sacrament of Spiritual cleansing and renewal.

And then, he mentions the Baptism of Jesus,“the baptism of water and the Spirit, without which no one can enter the kingdom of God,” as Jesus so eloquently portrays it to Nicodemus.

And yet,  even though our Baptismal Salvation initiates our Faith Journey to God, it’s not quite enough to give us all we need to answer that demanding Call of Jesus. As we’re all, well aware, there are pitfalls, temptations, and avalanches of death that can smother the fire in our hearts, for the Lord.

So, in many, and varied ways, St. Luke and Jesus point us to that all-empowering, that enlightening, discerning and strengthening Sacrament, specifically designed for our souls and wills, the Sacrament of Confirmation. Through its visible signs of Chrism Anointing and Laying on of Hands, the Holy Spirit had endowed the Apostles and us, brothers and sisters, with the Power: to overcome sicknesses of body and spirit, to be able to understand and discern Truth from deceit, and to actually LIVE in the Righteousness of Jesus.

And even more so, to be ABLE to truly ACT on Jesus’s Commission, His Call, for us to share His Love in our world.

Some of us have followed that Call, all the way to devoting our entire lives in Religious, Diaconal, or Priestly vocations, through Professions, or Vows, or the Sacrament of Holy Orders.

Some of us have been blessed with the vocation of Holy Matrimony, in order to populate the world with beautiful, young, zealous Christian families, led by fathers, and mothers, whom we honor today (Mother’s Day).

And ALL of us, in our constant need of Spiritual and Physical nourishment, always come back to our Home here; our home with one another, and with our Jesus. This is our Sacrament of Church, and our union with Jesus, through the Most Blessed Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity, we are ONE!

And all of it, from the Incarnation to the Ascension of Jesus, and the Descent of the Holy Spirit, all of it is absolutely mind boggling, when you think about the immensity of God’s Love!

And all of it, from Adam and Eve through the ‘Grand unification’ of all of us, and the Beatific Vision of God, is beyond our wildest imaginations. And so, we know that this is NOT the End of the Story.

We have so, so very much more to DO, and to SEE: souls to save, wars to end, prayers to be prayed, lives to bid farewell to (for a time), and beautiful New Lives to welcome into our sheepfold, our family.

No more Training Wheels for us! Our Call is clear. The Road is open, And our Time to fly is NOW! So, let’s not keep Jesus waiting any longer,  as we look forward to “the  Life of the world to come. Amen”  †

05-11-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

May 11, 2024
Jesus said to His disciples, “The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures but I will tell you clearly about the Father. On that day you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you. For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God.” Jn_16:23b-28

Know, Believe, Ask and Receive!

And then, Give Thanks, for having such a Loving God as ours!

Give thanks to Jesus for the pain that led to our own Spiritual Birth!

OH, the Joy!

05-10-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

May 10, 2024
(St. Damien Joseph de Veuster, of Moloka’i, Priest)
Jesus said, “When a woman is in labor, she is in anguish because her hour has arrived; but when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the pain because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.” Jn_16:20-23

Now, I’m not a woman, and I know that Jesus doesn’t lie, but is this true for most of you women out there?  Not to be poking at a hornet’s nest, but it does sound a little idealistic.  Would that all women could realize the joy they could have received, had it not been for abortion, miscarriage, and lots of other ways life is refused or missed.  Sometimes it seems the pain of missing out on that life is much more permanent for women than the passing pain of childbirth (not to belittle its intensity).  As a father, we get to enjoy the pain and the wonderful joys of child-rearing!  And thanks be to God for the strength of the Holy Spirit, in all of us, through it all!

05-09-24 Catholic Daily Mass Quotes

May 9, 2024
Jesus said to his disciples: “A little while and you will no longer see me, and again a little while later and you will see me.” Jn_16:16-20

How often do we “see” Jesus, beloved?  Do we see Him in the morning when we awake?  Do we see Him in the evening before we sleep?  But how about those times when our day is not quite working out the way we’d like?  How about those times when everything in life seems just about perfect?  How about those times when we see, when we remember, the enormous need for God in a troubled world? Maybe it’s a good reminder that we should see Jesus in EVERY moment of our lives.  For the good times and the bad.  For the times of need and the times of thanksgiving.  In the beautiful smile of a child and in the wrenching pain of the hungry, the homeless, the jobless, the persecuted.  Jesus is always here with us!  Can we see Him?  Can anyone see Him in us???

Jesus said to his disciples: “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth.” Jn_16:12-15

Sometimes, beloved, we’re just not ready.  We’re not ready for something deeper than we can understand.  Not ready to accept something we have strong misconceptions about.  Not ready to discover the mysterious, the miraculous.  Sometimes, beloved, we just have to let go of all that baggage and open our eyes and hearts to discover the Spirit of God within us, probing, testing, answering those deepest mysteries of life that are right there for the taking.  God is patient with us.  And one day we’ll ALL see!

Their jailer asked Paul and Silas, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you and your household will be saved.”Acts_16:22-34

Jesus said to his disciples: “Now I am going to the one who sent me, . . . For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes he will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and condemnation: sin, because they do not believe in me; righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me; condemnation, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.” Jn_16:5-11

And so, where is the condemnation?  And where is the sin?  And where IS the righteousness?  In our faith, in OUR righteousness, in our Jesus, beloved, we have been redeemed!  And the condemnation is not ours but belongs to our persecutors, belongs to the unbelievers, to the world of immorality, who are trying to force it unto us.  But we, in our firmness of belief, in our rejection of their condemnation of us, we are the ones who are truly free and saved and living both now and forever more in Christ Jesus our Lord!

Jesus said to his disciples: “When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me. And you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.”  Jn_15:26-16:4a

Filled with His JOY, filled with His LOVE, filled with the Holy Spirit, how can we not testify!

Jesus is Lord!  And His Love and our Faith will lead us to Salvation!  Come Lord Jesus!

(Sixth Sunday of Easter)
Jesus said, “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy might be complete. This is my commandment: love one another as I love you.” Jn_15:9-17

NO GREATER JOY!

Jesus said to his disciples: “If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you.” Jn_15:18-21

So, do not despair, beloved.  You have been chosen and are loved by the ONLY one who really matters, Jesus Christ!

(Ss. James (the Less) and Philip, Apostles)
St. Paul wrote, I am reminding you, brothers and sisters, of the Gospel I preached to you, which you indeed received and in which you also stand. Through it you are also being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. For I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures; that he was buried; that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures; that he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve.”  1_Cor_15:1-8

Jesus said to Thomas, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” Philip said to him, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip?  Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works.  Jn_14:6-14

The disciples were having a really hard time with two, kind of deep concepts: concepts of “knowing” and “believing.” After three years of close and intimate contact with Jesus, we might even call it “relationship,” Jesus was surprised and disappointed that His Apostles still did not “know” Him; they still did not understand what He was trying to teach them, over all that time.

And we can extend this point to wondering if ANY of us truly KNOW anyone else, or even ourselves, for that matter. Knowing, can truly be a challenge.

And then, their second challenge was “Believing.”

If, for example, we read in the “Media” that a new virus was killing hundreds or thousands of people around the globe, would we believe it? Of course, we know that the News never lies!! But the question is: Do we know how many people normally die in the same time period? Do we knowwhat – they all died from? And do we knowif the death rate of this new virus should really be something that we should uproot the entire world over?

In other words, IS our knowing, and our believing, and our actionsjustified in Truth?

And yet, if, on the other hand, I were to tell you that I had a vision of my own death. And that it almost 99% happened, exactly as I envisioned it, would you believe me? Or, would you think, that I’m really, kind of loopy? And maybe even ponder, whether I should be committed to a loony bin?

It all gets down to knowing and believing, or even, believing and knowing.

Jesus was trying to describe to His disciples, a whole new dimension to life. And not knowing Him, as well as they should have, the disciples had a really hard time believing Him.

And so, here’s my silly analogy. Well, imagine, if you will, that our whole life exists – ON and AS, this plain sheet of two-dimensional paper. And there we are, John and Mary Q. Public. And we can move to the left, or to the right, to the top or to the bottom of that sheet. And regardless, if the sheet is flat or crumpled, upside down, or inside out, all we Know of life is being ON that sheet. Our entire lives are centered on this sheet.

And there, on that sheet, are our homes, and our jobs, our kids, and our thoughts, our dreams, and our hopes.  All of them reside there, and only there.

And as we go through life, and learn and experience it, eventually we all come to the edge. And we all FALL off! And that’s the end of it, because we don’t Know, nor Believe that there is anything more to life – than just this sheet.

And then, all of a sudden, out of the blue, we have this JESUS! And Jesus tells us that there really IS MORE to life than what we ever knew. There is a whole, different dimension, in which there is NO End of the sheet!  A third dimension, if you will.

And that Dimension is called, “Eternal Life.” And once this “Mortal” stage or phase of our existence is complete, the New Dimension we enter, will be better than anything we could have ever imagined on this simple, two-dimensional sheet.

And we think we know this Jesus. And we think we believe in this Jesus. And yet – and YET, we ask, SHOW US?

And then, Jesus also tells us that there is only ONE way to get there, only one way to get TO this new dimension of life.  And it’s through Him.

You see, the Father, whom we call our God, is totally OFF the sheet. He is, and always has been. We’ve come to know OF Him through Abraham, through the Patriarchs, Moses and the Prophets. But, you see, God, our Father, was never really ON the sheet. And even though Jesus appeared TO us, ON the sheet, being ONE with God the Father, as no one has ever been before, Jesus Proved to us – that the End of the sheet is not REALLY the END. He CAME BACK! And so can WE! And so WILL we, when we Believe!

All we need to do, beloved, is Enter through the “Narrow Gate,” through the simple Heart of the Love of Jesus. And the Holy Spirit is right there, to help us, to lead us, and to guide us. Knowing and Believing and Observing every Truth we’ve learned from Jesus, the Kingdom of God truly IS ours, now and forever!

(St. Athanasius, Bishop and Doctor of the Church)
Jesus said to his disciples: “As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love.”  Jn_15:9-11

Love,  Love,  Love . . . all we need!

. . . in Jesus’ name, Amen!

(St. Joseph the Worker)
Jesus said, “Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.”  Jn_15:1-8

Hmmm, sounds just like those employers of ours, at least in the days when I was working in the world.  We had to prove our existence by the fruit of our work.  And that fruit, for the corporate world, was income.  We were called to make for the company at least double our own salaries.  And that’s was not being in sales positions, but in engineering and science.  Not an easy task.  But it was what fed our own families as well.  If we were not able to accomplish that edict, we were called on the block and often sent our merry way – to find another employer who might sympathize with our plight!

God wants to see our productivity as well, beloved!  Clearly not in a capitalistic, but in a spiritual sense.  Whom did we get a smile out of today; and not in an immoral way, but in a hopeful, joyful way that gave the glory to God, to Jesus?  Whom did we encourage with kudos for creativity, for growth in their own spiritual lives?  And whom may we have even inspired to dig deeper into their faith and maybe even seek a religious vocation for their own futures?  These are the fruit, Jesus is looking for from us, beloved.  And the only way we can accomplish that is to stay connected to Jesus in every thing we do, and in every thought we think.  Pray, read, study, receive the blessed Sacrament, do penance, and most of all LOVE – love God and everyone else!   And Jesus will shine through us!

May the Faith be with you, always!
Happy May!
