(St. Boniface, Bishop and Martyr)
Jesus said, “Have you not read this Scripture passage: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes?'” Mk_12:1-12
In today’s Scriptures we hear the beginning of the story of Tobit and Tobiah, a righteous man and his son who fearlessly followed the Lord’s commands, even at the risk of personal affliction at the hands of Godless men. It really is just another story of the afflictions done to all of God’s prophets. Be it greed, or jealousy, pride or simple ignorance, mankind has this innate nature to strike out at anyone or anything that displeases them, rather than bending with patience and compassion for the plight or virtues of others. This is where the commandments, the teachings, and our obedience to God bring us salvation. Not only is it for the salvation of others through our acts of kindness and understanding, but that same kindness brings us peace of mind for not acting contrary to God’s laws of conscience built right there within us.
Jesus presents a parable today, to the Jewish priests, scribes and elders highlighting the evil that their ancestors had done to the prophets for the sake of their own greed. Ignoring the warning and opportunity to change that heritage, the leaders then proceed to act just as horrifically toward Jesus. And we know the end of that story. It’s all a great reminder to us as well, beloved. Maybe instead of getting angry at the next $%&* who abuses us, we should offer them and ourselves the benefit of the doubt by either forgiving them or praying for their peace and conversion to the joy God has to offer to us all! Who knows, that forgiven, though rejected stone, just might be the next cornerstone of God’s temple!
